FBI Arrests Sudbury Man for Being a Muslim
Tariq Mehanna, of Sudbury, MA, was arrested Wednesday by the FBI in connection with alleged terrorist plots. This is not the first time he has been harassed by the FBI (Mehanna was arrested in 2008 and later released due to lack of real evidence). Mehanna is a devout Muslim and a highly respected figure in his community.

Noam Chomsky on the Cuban 5
Chomsky was itnerviewed by Radio Havana Cuba on the eve of the 11th anniversary of the arbitrary arrest and detention in Miami of Cubans Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez, who after a legally flawed trial in Miami District Court, are incarcerated in US prisons for infiltrating anti-Cuba Miami based groups of terrorists with the aim of defending Cuba against US based terrorism. As Professor Chomsky says in this interview "They weren't criminals. They were heroes". He points out "that the only way to remedy the injustice is to withdraw the charges completely".

Cracks Emerging in NAFTA
The once-solid North American Free Trade Act (NAFTA) is starting to show its age. The 1994 trade agreement that laid the foundation for the economic/political integration of North America is encountering serious internal ruptures, threatening future “progress.”

The problems are numerous: fights over trade, immigration, and military cooperation are all issues that Obama recently discussed in Mexico with his NAFTA partners, Mexico and Canada. The annual meeting that usually delivers plans for additional integration was instead used to remedy these heated issues, none of which were fully solved.

Honduras Resiste: A Speech on the Global Day of Action
7-31-2009__tegus_congreso_160cmi.PNGGood afternoon compañeras y compañeros, passersby, workers, bosses, fellow-citizens, humans, aliens. We unite today to celebrate the resistance to the military coup in Honduras, to lament for the fallen, disappeared, & wounded in the struggle, & to shout NO to the impunity of the men who have, for the moment, overturned the will of the Honduran people. Now we witness, in this twist of irony that is a drop of the lifeblood of history, that the actions of the golpistas not only fortify the popular will they aim to repress, they have set off an awakening in Honduras that no fleet, airforce infantry or death-squad will be capable of reversing.

Boston Informational Picket in Solidarity with the Honduran Resistance
picket_8-11-09.jpgOn Tuesday, August 11, nearly 60 people gathered at 4:30pm on the Park Street Station entrance to speak out in solidarity with the Honduran resistance. A diverse group of people held signs that read, “Micheletti fuera / out!”, “Bring democracy back to Honduras”, “Action to remove the coup from Honduras, now!”, “Honduras resists, democracy now!” The event was organized in response to a call for a Global Day of Action by the National Front of Resistance Against the Coup in Honduras.

Garment Workers Revolt: Bangladesh on Fire
bangladesh.pngThe garment industry in Bangladesh employs more than 2 million workers, 80-90% of whom are women. Bringing the impoverished nation $11 billion annually, the garment industry is Bangladesh’s largest income earner. If you go into your closet and start reading tags, you’ll probably find more than a few items made in Bangladesh. It should surprise no one that the destitute women who make our cheap clothes labor in incredibly unsafe buildings for as many as eighty hours a week, suffer intolerable working conditions, including verbal, physical, and sexual abuse, while earning little to nothing.

Obama's First Coup
urnas.png[Note: As of 11:15am, Caracas time, President Zelaya is speaking live on Telesur from San Jose, Costa Rica. He has verified the soldiers entered his residence in the early morning hours, firing guns and threatening to kill him and his family if he resisted the coup. He was forced to go with the soldiers who took him to the air base and flew him to Costa Rica. He has requested the U.S. Government make a public statement condemning the coup, otherwise, it will indicate their compliance.]

Caracas, Venezuela - The text message that beeped on my cell phone this morning read “Alert, Zelaya has been kidnapped, coup d’etat underway in Honduras, spread the word.” It’s a rude awakening for a Sunday morning, especially for the millions of Hondurans that were preparing to exercise their sacred right to vote today for the first time on a consultative referendum concerning the future convening of a constitutional assembly to reform the constitution. Supposedly at the center of the controversary is today’s scheduled referendum, which is not a binding vote but merely an opinion poll to determine whether or not a majority of Hondurans desire to eventually enter into a process to modify their constitution.

The Great Divide-Iran and Leftists
There seems to be a great divergence of opinion among liberals and leftists about what is really happening in Iran. There are those who think Iran is in somewhat of a vacuum and is only trying to have a democratic election against theocracy and a repressive attitude to women's rights. Other leftists think because the Bush administration in the past had contemplated military action and also covert actions by the CIA against Iran that these facts, among others, argue for an attempted coup taking place, especially given the enormous number of successful and unsuccessful CIA coups which have occurred in the past 60 years.

I have an excellent book entitled Killing Hope-US military and CIA interventions since World War 2 by William Blum. I would say that the only countries or continents not to have at least CIA spies in them would be places like Greenland or Antarctica that have little interest for multinational corporations because they are covered with huge ice sheets. Of course, this could change with global warming. You might be served a burger and fries by an Eskimo at the grand opening of McDonalds in Greenland.
