Community Protests Deutsche Bank
Deutsche.pngBOSTON – Equipped with megaphones, banners, and golf clubs, nearly 100 community members “teed off” at Deutsche Bank’s gala dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel on Boylston Street. In the early evening of September 2, Boston-area labor and housing activists—representing such groups as City Life/Vida Urbana, Jobs with Justice, Mass Alliance of HUD Tenants, Community Labor United, Mass Alliance Against Predatory Lending and the SEIU—demonstrated at the dinner, which kicked off the bank’s annual PGA golf championship.

Real Health Care Reform - Universal Single Payer
healthcare.pngOrganizations like Physicians for a National Health Program want Americans to have the same system in place in all other Western countries and elsewhere, including Venezuela, South Korea, Japan, Cuba, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand. But not in America - the only industrialized country without it despite spending more than double per capita than the other 30 OECD countries and delivering less for it.

In a September 2007 report to Congress, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) compared 2004 US health care spending with other OECD countries:

Democrats and Republicans Join Hands over Immigration
Even the most optimistic Obama supporter should cringe in response to the White House’s recent “bi-partisan immigration talks.” What could Democrats and Republicans possibly have in common over immigration? Quite a lot it turns out.

An enormous sell-out is being prepared for the U.S. immigrant population and Latinos especially — who came out in record numbers in many swing states to vote for Obama last year. Attached to these votes are huge expectations.

The revolution delayed: 10 years of Hugo Chávez’s rule
Nidiosniamonichavez-2.JPGThis month (February 2009) marks the tenth anniversary of Hugo Chávez’s coming to power in Venezuela, and ten years of the “Bolivarian revolution”. This process has included waves of state intervention in the economy and fervent rhetoric against US imperialism. But while some on the left see this Chavista movement as the new “socialism for the 21st century”, a more radical critique has argued that it is actually more like an old-fashioned attempt at modernisation by a technocratic élite (including an ex-situationist as second-in-command of the ministry of information and propaganda); that increased bureaucratic power over capital is not inherently progressive; and that the “revolution” in Venezuela allows for very little working-class control or initiative from below.

* A translation of a March 2008 interview conducted by the French anarchist Charles Reeve with two members of the El Libertario group www.nodo50.org/ellibertario in Caracas, the nation’s capital, which offers some stark insights into the reality of the situation.

Mass union leaders call on Obama to support Medicare for All
More than forty Massachusetts labor leaders have signed onto a letter to President Obama raising concerns that some policy makers in Washington are backing health care reforms based on the state plan adopted two years ago. The Massachusetts plan features an "individual mandate" requiring all citizens to buy private health insurance. The letter sent today and spearheaded by the Jobs with Justice coalition, states:

Philippines: Don’t revive the “Monster of Morong, Bataan”
Bataan-Nuclear-Power-Plant-Philippines.jpgMonday, 02 February 2009 MANILA, Philippines—For making the public choose between paying more for power generation that they do not need to begin with, and tolerating misplaced priorities where debt service supersedes social welfare, the Freedom from Debt Coalition today urged Congress to stop the planned rehabilitation, re-commission and commercial operation of the controversial Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

March to Support the Greek Insurrection
In response to the call to action from Greece, at noon on Saturday, December 20th people will meet at Faneuil Hall to march in support of the Greek insurrection. “It is important to take action in support of the rebels who are risking their lives to fight against the conditions imposed upon them by authoritarian governments and a broken capitalist system,” says Boston Anarchist Frances Roylos. “If we have to choose between starvation and revolution, we choose revolution.”
