43 Events to Resist the Green Scare World Wide
09 Jun 2006
Boston--December 7, 2005, marked the beginning of the largest roundup of environmental and animal rights activists in U.S. history. There have now been nearly 20 arrests and many Grand Jury subpoenas.

The nation-wide sweep of arrests, dubbed “Operation Backfire,” has been described by the FBI as a major hit to environmentalists and animal rights activists who engage in destruction of property as a means to defend wild lands and lives of animals. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales stated in January that, “Investigating and preventing animal rights and environmental extremism is one of the FBI’s highest domestic priorities”.

FRIDAY, JUNE 9th: benefit show and screening of 22/8. SUNDAY, JUNE 11th: symbolic demo at the federal building where different organizations will be speaking about the green scare.
grandjury graphic red.GIF
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-New Jersey) said. "The Oklahoma City bombing
killed 168 people. The attacks of 9/11 killed 3,000. Since 1993, there
have been at least five fatal attacks on doctors who performed legal
abortions. Eric Rudolph recently pleaded guilty to placing a bomb in a
public area during the Olympic Games in 1996, as well as bombing a
Birmingham women's clinic and a gay nightclub. All of these cases involved
the loss of human life. To date, not a single incident of so-called
environmental terrorism has killed anyone."

Despite the lack of human injury in any of these actions, the government
is threatening extraordinary sentences, ranging from 30 years to life plus
335 years. Similar crimes committed without political motivation receive
far shorter sentences and even different charges. For example, a string
of nine recent church arsons are being described by the authorities as
“youthful pranks”.

Environmental activist Jeff “Free” Luers received a disproportionately
long sentence (22.8 years) after confessing to attempting to burn three
SUVs at a Romania dealership in Eugene, OR. At trial, Jeff clearly stated
that his action was a desperate attempt to bring awareness to the
destruction of the Earth by this unsustainable form of transportation and
its external costs of global warming, pollution, and war for oil. Because
of his stated political beliefs, “Free” received an extremely long prison
sentence; he is charged with a Measure 11 crime despite the fact that this
fire did not endanger any life; and he continues to suffer harassment by
the Department of Corrections due to his designation as a member of a
Security Threat Group’.

June 2006 marks the sixth year that “Free” has been in prison as well as
the 3rd year of International Days of Solidarity with him. The focus of
international events this year will be on “Operation Backfire” and what
many are calling a “Green Scare” campaign of government repression.

Call for Weekend of Resistance Against the "Green Scare" June 9 - 11, 2006

by Jeff Free Luers

This June marks my 6th year in prison. From behind these walls I have strived to remain an active part of this struggle; from contributing to the dialogue and discussion of tactics, to furthering the debate on climate change in the public. Perhaps most importantly I am proof that prison cannot crush the spirit of resistance.

This year has seen an increase in state repression against activists and radicals alike. It is truly a scary time. We all know about the "Red Scare" - the government's attempt to justify repression by labeling dissidents "communists" back in the 1950's. Today we see their "Green Scare" attempt to crush resistance by labeling them "eco-terrorists."

For the last three years, June 11th has been celebrated as an international day of solidarity with me, Jeffrey Luers. I have been overjoyed with a sense of love & pride at the support I have received from around the world. My deepest and sincerest thanks go out to all of you.

Right now there are more than a dozen people sitting in American jails (or on strict bail release) accused of Earth/Animal Liberation Front actions. Six people were originally arrested. These arrests were based almost entirely on the testimony of one police informant, Jacob Ferguson. Bill Rodgers - accused of multiple arsons - took his own life in a jail cell. Unfortunately, several of those arrested are now cooperating with the state.

These defendants are facing ridiculous charges and a draconian amount of time.

This June, I ask you to show them the solidarity that you have shown me. I ask that foremost in your mind be the thought that the state is trying to break this struggle with repressive and intimidating arrests and sentences. I hope you understand that it's not just those of us in prison being punished with these sentences; they are designed to be examples to you, to frighten you into compliance. This June I'm asking you to demonstrate that you can't be intimidated. Celebrate your dissent, give it voice. Be loud. Be visible. If you have the ability, organize a reclaim the streets party or a critical mass.

If you are going to host a fundraiser or venue event, I ask that you donate all proceeds to the legal defense of those recently arrested who maintain integrity in the face of repression, whether they are innocent or guilty.

This June, show the world that the voice of truth will not be silenced by fear.

Contact Friends of Jeff Luers, PO Box 3, Eugene, OR 97440 USA or email freefreenow (at) mutualaid.org for organizing resources.

For a list of planned events, click here.

June 9 - 11, 2006, is a Weekend of Resistance Against the Green Scare. There is no central organizing body or group to check in with but the Jeff Luers Support Network can help by providing you with flyers, graphics, and merchandise such as videos, zines and stickers about Jeff and allies in the struggle. Begin planning your event now. Read more about the Green Scare defendants here. Plan an action that makes sense for your area: a demonstration, treesit, music festival, teach-in, stenciling campaign, rally, protests at an American consulate/embassy overseas or public forum. Circulate petitions. Contribute to the legal defense for the defendants. Do what you think is appropriate. But please remember when planning an action or event think about how it could affect the upcoming court cases. Ask yourself: does this help or hurt the defendants? Does this strengthen the movement or weaken it in the long-term?

Re: 43 Events to Resist the Green Scare World Wide

Violence only begets violence. It is true that there are insidious political motivations behind the crackdown on activists which are wholly despicable, but that is all the more reason for us to be careful and not to engage in dangerous activities like … setting things on fire ... because people COULD get hurt and that perception will only turn the public against us at a time when we need them on our side. We are not the enemy here. So why would we keep making ourselves look like the enemy, playing right into the hands of the NeoCon agenda. We need to show we can hold the moral high ground against such small minds by not acting like a bunch of unprofessional ego-driven delinquents who have no concern for the consequences of our actions.
IN "FREE'S" OWN WORDS
09 Jun 2006
From “Free’s” web site :http://freefreenow.org/whois.html

“My name is Jeffrey Luers. On June 16, 2000 I ignited a fire that would forever change my life. I torched 3 SUV’s.

I struck back. In an act of resistance designated to raise awareness and draw attention to a problem

In the end I was convicted of 11 felony charges. I was sentenced to 22 years and 8 months. Most of my friends call me "Free". I have no possibility of parole.”

He played with fire and shot his mouth off to undercover cops. Did this guy ever think of putting his ideas on a leaflet and going to were he might find some sympathetic people. Maybe he should have done his web site idea as a way to publicize his theories before he set fires. What kind of toxic fumes come off a burning SUV? Isn’t that irresponsible? Who voted for him to be an individual ‘angel of vengeance’ in defense against some nebulous ‘war against nature.’ He has the same mind-set as the Unbomber Ted Kaczynski, who had decided that “nature” was being tampered with, and that “we weren’t meant to live this way.” He was convicted of murder for sending mail bombs to various people for nearly eighteen years, killing three and wounding 29. He justified his crimes as a fight against the evils of technological progress.

You really can't compare militant eco-activists to Ted Kaczyniski. While I don't necessarily agree with their tactics all of the time, the ELF and other so-called "eco-terrorists" go OUT OF THEIR WAY to make sure that nobody gets hurt.
Furthermore, Allen, I congratulate you on condemning ALL of these activsts, despite the fact that most of them HAVE NOT EVEN BEEN CONVICTED YET. To demonstrate how absurd your logic is, here's an example:
ATTENTION, EVERYONE, I HEARD THAT ALLEN IS A FLAMING RACIST! HE HATES ANYONE WHO ISN'T WHITE AND SLEEPS WITH A COPY OF MEIN KAMPF UNDER HIS PILLOW! We must stand up, and speak out against him and nazis like him. They may claim to be progressive, but deep down they only want to further their own agenda of ethnic cleansing. Let's move away from Allen, and other racists like him, who not only play right into the hands of the NeoCon agenda, but actually take it up a notch. We need to hold the moral high ground over this unprofessional, racist-driven deliquent who has no concern for the betterment of humanity and the planet as a whole.
On another note, I would like to applaud anyone who goes out of their way for the sake of Mother Earth. Earth First! all the way.

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecoterrorism

The term eco-terrorism is a neologism which has been used to describe threats and acts of violence (both against people and against property), sabotage, vandalism, property damage and intimidation committed in the name of environmentalism. As a pejorative term, "eco-terrorism" has also been used to describe legally-protected forms of nonviolent protest by environmentalists, which is generally seen as an attempt to associate this activity with other more contentious acts that can legitimately be labeled as eco-terrorism.

The term is considered controversial, particularly by those to whom it is applied. Many of the arguments in this respect concern what may be considered violence, and in particular whether acts which are destructive to property but avoid harm to human beings may be considered terrorism.

in my career as a domestic law enforcement officer i have on numerous occasions been directed to protect the first amendment rights of individuals who were burning the us flag (arson). wny then the hypocrisy on the part of the federal government to allow some arson as a legitamate means of protest and not others???

if an alqade strike force slips through the cracks because federal resources are targeting tree hugging college students then criminal charges of dereliction of duty should be leveled against the office of the president department of justice and the fbi

Police "Troll" david deburro of Methuen.

How many times did people burn flags, or even have a demonstration in Methuen? Or do 'war stories' fall apart when looked at closely?

"i have on numerous occasions been directed to protect the first amendment rights of individuals who were burning the us flag" David Deburro.

How about some dates of these burnings. By the way, when people burn a flag - it is usually a flag that they purchased themselves, not THE FLAG.
If the ECO-ARSONIST Luer had purchased three SUV's and set them on fire he would probably not be sitting in jail right now calling himself "Free." He would be "free" to spread his beliefs peacefully.

man indymedia is far to the right, or at least the authoritarian side of the left these days. truly it is sad when those being witch-hunted for standing up to the state-corporate juggernaut are ridiculed and condemned by so called fellow activists sitting in armchairs behind keyboards. who needs COINTELPRO when we've got you people to run our movements down from within with your petty ego bullshit?

Seriously, folks the Earth is doomed…

The Sun is half way through its life,

It’s all downhill from here..

As the sun ages it will use up its fuel and begin to expand and turn Red.

The Earth will either be swallowed up in a collision with the Sun, or it will orbit near the Sun like Mercury, a burned rock. The seas will have long since evaporated, and the atmosphere will be a small fraction of what it is today.

But we have a potential frozen Earth in the Moon Europa, so who needs the Earth, fair weather friend, we just have to go to Mars and then to Europa……and good riddance Earth

This whole freefree and eco-prisoner support "movement" has COINTELPRO written all over it. Don't fall for it!

Every serious eco saboteur knows that the movement has no group, so solid form but instead is a spirt of action. Therefore, the attempt to support those who have failed (yes getting caught is falure and requires immediate distancing from the larger non-movement) is an attempt to centralize the amorphose nature of radical eco activism. Free and the others are not following the "playbook" they are seeking to create a movement of solidarity with their failed acts, which only undermines the non-movement. Don't undermine the very activism you claim to be acting for, don't seek solidarity if you are caught and most of all don't get caught! Live it!

if i were considering doing some sort of eco-sabotage that could place me behind bars for my whole life if something goes wrong, i sure as fuck want to make sure my movement doesn't distance itself from me if i end up serving time. if you don't set up political prisoner support networks, no one's gonna do direct action anymore. if you don't help people when the state takes them hostage, they won't help you if the state takes you hostage.
ANIMAL LIBERATION?
10 Jun 2006
Animal Consciousness

Daniel C. Dennett http://ase.tufts.edu/cogstud/papers/animconc.htm

Are animals conscious? The way we are? Which species, and why? What is it like to be a bat, a rat, a vulture, a whale?

For current thinking about animal consciousness is a mess. Hidden and not so hidden agendas distort discussion and impede research. A kind of comic relief can be found--if you go in for bitter irony--by turning to the "history of the history" of the controversies.

I am not known for my spirited defenses of René Descartes, but I find I have to sympathize with an honest scientist who was apparently the first victim of the wild misrepresentations of the lunatic fringe of the animal rights movement.

Animal rights activists such as Peter Singer and Mary Midgley have recently helped spread the myth that Descartes was a callous vivisector, completely indifferent to animal suffering because of his view that animals (unlike people) were mere automata. As Justin Leiber (1988) has pointed out, in an astringent re-examination of the supposed evidence for this, "There is simply not a line in Descartes to suggest that he thought we are free to smash animals at will or free to do so because their behavior
can be explained mechanically."

Moreover, the favorite authority of Descartes's accusors, Montaigne, on whom both Singer and Midgley also uncritically rely, was a gullible romantic of breathtaking ignorance, eager to take the most fanciful folktales of animal mentality at face value, and not at all interested in finding

"This whole freefree and eco-prisoner support "movement" has COINTELPRO written all over it. Don't fall for it!"

are you fucking kidding? thats a really messed up thing to say because if movements, however "amorphous" are going to engage in direct action, we MUST support our jailed comrades like any radical movement, and people are putting themselves in the way of government harassment by willing to work as aboveground solidarity people, it's not taken lightly.

the only thing that smacks of cointelpro logic, in fact is using a 'eco-saboteur' stance to argue against supporting eco-sab prisoners?? AND that you're even implying what these peopel are.
Re: 43 Events to Resist the Green Scare World Wide
11 Jun 2006
First let me clarify and back off a bit from my first comment; the COINTELPRO comment was not aimed at the people who do the acts or the people who support them, or anyone who is honestly attempting to help those who are imprisoned. In retrospect it was a bit too polemic and I am sorry if I offended any of the organizers of this or any other event.

That said I would still have to disagree with the tactic and with the comrades that posted here. anarchie says: " if you don't set up political prisoner support networks, no one's gonna do direct action anymore". I agree that we should set up prisner support and legal support for direct action, but we are not talking about direct action or civil disobedience. We are talking about something which, at least to those who live in the real world, will never garnish sympathy and support from the majority of the general polity. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out these acts (if that is your thing, it is not mine) in such a manner as to elude capture and to as I said appear to, and in realty not have, a penetratable organizational structure. The creation of a movement to support the non-movement acts as a proxy movement for all political purposes, which connects the non-movement to actual people and groups that have a penetratable oragainzational structure. You defeat the strength of the non-movement by appling failed tactics and orgainzational structures.

On the point that we disuade action by not supporting those who have been cought I would argue that any support is but a pile of beans to someone in prison for any long length of time. Knowing that I will get nice prep rally letters while I am some big guys bitch does not asuage my anxiety of getting caught. Conversly, the creation of a movement to highlight how people are getting caught could be seen as dissuading people from acting and the whole notion of a group of supporters knowing what I may or may not do also adds unneeded points of penetration to the opperation.

The history of eco sabotage reveals a lack of penetration by law enforcement up to about the point that EF! journal started with the prisner support movement, then a precipitous rise in capture can be witnessed. Go back and read Abbey and Forman: The first rule is to not get caught, the second rule is to not get caught and the third rule is to not get caught.
Re: 43 Events to Resist the Green Scare World Wide
11 Jun 2006
i agree that you should try not to get caught, and that some of the people who have gotten caught simply weren't as careful as they should have been. but shit happens sometimes. abbey and foreman aren't leaders of earth first! or the radical environmental movement, and it's perfectly ok to disagree with them.

you just disagree with jeff luers' tactic of burning SUVs. i don't think it was a very effective tactic either. regardless, burning SUVs is direct action, and so is blockading a road, and so is occupying an office, and so is doing street theater. regardless of how legal your action is, if you're in any way effective, the government will want you in jail, and you'll be a political prisoner. it's fine to not support jeff luers if you disagree with how he went about doing his action, but that doesn't mean his prison support group is a bad thing, and that we should distance ourselves from it.
Re: 43 Events to Resist the Green Scare World Wide
11 Jun 2006
Brad,

Well, if you "go back and read Foreman"....he got caught, too!!! to say that EF! started getting penetrated right when they started to feature prisoner support in the pages of the Journal isn't accurate.

Which is not to say that I don't agree with everything that you wrote, because I think there are interesting ideas in there. But EF! was a target of COINTELPRO. Judi Bari & Foreman? Peg Millet? Coronado? I mean, I'm sure you know that, so I'm wondering why you associate the rise in jail time with the rise of prisoner support. I think it was the other way around -- ALF/ELF action were undertaken by more and more people. And for a lot of folks, prisoner support is a good way to support the actions that they are not necessarily (for reasons both practical and perhaps ideological) aren't willing to take.
Re: 43 Events to Resist the Green Scare World Wide
12 Jun 2006
brad, thanks for clarifying rather than getting MORE polemical which is what a lot of people do... (especially on this imc!) youre making a lot more sense to me now BUT i still have some disagreements.

"We are talking about something which, at least to those who live in the real world, will never garnish sympathy and support from the majority of the general polity."

that really isn't the point, the point is to SUPPORT THE PRISONERS! with legal, financial, emotional support. it's not about "nice prep rally letters while I am some big guys bitch" (and never mind the appropriateness of joking about prison rape), it's about community. how did backfire start? someone talked. why is it still going? because people are still talking. so the question is why? if i had to guess i'd say part of it is that they are more afraid of the government's power to punish them than they are confident of being rooted in a community which will love and support them as best its able.

if what you're saying is, "if you really want to support the prisoners, just go do direct action" i definitely hear that argument, but its not like there can't or shouldn't be both aboveground and underground participation! again for anyone who is caught up in the legal and punitive machinery of the state, which is a public situation, it is frightening to feel like no one has your back, reassuring to know someone does. which will hopefully lead to less snitching and a stronger 'movement' or tendency or whatever you want to call it overall. corellating prisoner support with state actions against ef!, if its even accurate, doesn't necessarily mean that one caused the other.
EARTH FIRST, THEN THE MOON, THEN MARS

Hawking says humans must go into space

HONG KONG - The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth, world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday.

The British astrophysicist told a news conference in Hong Kong that humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years.

"We won't find anywhere as nice as Earth unless we go to another star system," added Hawking, who arrived to a rock star's welcome Monday. Tickets for his lecture planned for Wednesday were sold out.
He added that if humans can avoid killing themselves in the next 100 years, they should have space settlements that can continue without support from Earth.

"It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of."
Re: the Green Scare World Wide
13 Jun 2006
Our population has almost doubled in the last 30 years. Now, with genetic science, we're on the verge of making ourselves "immune" to disease. Not to mention nano-medicine and other disciplines that we're only just starting to understand. It's actually sort of scary how quickly science is accelerating.

I still think they got a lot of technology from the spaceship that crashed at Roswell....Way too much advancement in electronics happened since....

Most people are completely unaware of the enormous strides we've made in the last few decades. All of human history pretty much remained static except for the occasional jump forward but, with computers, the last few decades has been and ever-increasing acceleration in every field.

I think we're nearing a "critical mass" in knowledge where we will either become enlightened and ensure the continuance of our species or we'll destroy ourselves through our ignorance like a kid playing with a bic lighter near three brand new SUV‘s.

Activist: Police ask for DNA as scare tactic
By JEN FISH, Portland Press Herald Writer

An environmental activist said Thursday he refused to give state police a sample of his DNA, calling the request an attempt to intimidate people and a possible violation of his civil rights.
Jim Freeman, a member of Earth First!, said he was among the dozen environmental activists in Maine asked to provide samples of their DNA as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
Freeman said he was approached by a forensic specialist working for the Maine State Police. The specialist, he said, was working with police to inventory camp equipment confiscated by police in April after Earth First! attempted a protest campout on Sears Island.
Freeman said police initially told him his DNA was wanted as part of an ongoing investigation into a broken padlock on Sears Island. Freeman said after more questions, police told him the investigation was actually related to the vandalism incidents at Plum Creek.
Earth First! and other environmental groups have staunchly opposed the planned develop- ment around Moosehead Lake by the Seattle-based Plum Creek Timber Co.
Last November, vandals hurled rocks, paint, and animal feces at five homes and businesses connected with Plum Creek in four different towns.
Freeman said he knows nine of the 12 people police asked to provide DNA samples.
"We feel this is just trying to scare us, it has more to do with that than a true investigation," he said.
Steve McCausland, public safety spokesman, said Thursday that the request made by police "was totally voluntary," and that two people did provide DNA samples.
He said police are not disclosing the names of people who were asked and he also declined to specify what investigation the request was connected to.
While it appears that police did not coerce people or do anything illegal in asking for DNA, the request is troubling to some who question the civil rights implications of collecting DNA samples from people who have not been charged with a crime.
"We believe law enforcement doesn't have the right to collect your DNA without a warrant," said Shenna Bellows, executive director of the Maine Civil Liberties. "Environmentalists have a right to criticize the state's policies without fear that it will lead to intimidation or visits to their home and collection of DNA."
Jonathan Carter, director of the Forest Ecology Network and a vocal opponent of Plum Creek, said police have not approached him and if they did, he would not give them his DNA.
"This is Big Brother and I think there's some real civil liberties issues being comprised," he said.
Rep. Janet Mill, D-Farmington, who opposed an eco-terrorism bill debated by the Legislature, said Thursday that she hoped police had valid reasons for requesting the samples.
"If (police) had probable cause, they could have obtained a a search warrant," she said. "If they didn't have probable cause, then it sounds like a fishing expedition."
Chuck Dow, spokesman for the Attorney General's Office, said ultimately the courts will decide if people's rights were violated, but the case is not even close to that point.
Philip Worden, an attorney representing some of the people asked to provide DNA, also likened the request to a fishing expedition.
"My own main concern isn't just with the people that were asked," Worden told the Associated Press. "It's the chilling effect on everybody else. If you get the idea that just because somebody attended a legal environmental meeting, that by doing that the state police might show up at your doorstep, ask for a DNA sample as though you might be suspected of some sort of terrorist activity . . . that's going to scare people."
Freeman said he has not decided whether to take legal action against state police.
But he said the request will not have a chilling effect, and may even galvanize more people to join the cause.
"We're not going to be intimidated by this," he said.

I don't think Earth First! is advocating the rock throwing and vandalism... They are just showing that it was a display of resistence not analyzing the legitimacy of the tactic itself.
