Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, a supporter of the dangerous "BioSafety Level- 4" (BSL-4) lab, was targeted by Operation: Over and other opponents of the proposed lab on Monday. Biolab opponents gathered at Boston City Hall for the fourth weekly death procession and for the beginning of their focus on the Mayor. |
|
Though Menino proclaims that he has "always believed the purpose of government is to help improve people's lives", he supports the biolab regardless of the serious threat it wouldl pose to the surrounding community and the people of Boston. Rather that considering what would be the best way to improve the lives of the residents in Roxbury and the South End, Menino supports the lab even though it is not supported by those effected. Menino can't be the type of politician he describes in the quote above (as taken from his website) and support the biolab at the same time. Participants in the campaign against the biolab will continue to put pressure on people like Menino as long as their decisions threaten our lives with their support of the biolab.
Monday's action drew a slightly larger crowd than usual. Operation: Over had made shirts for people to wear that read "No BSL4- Menino's support risks our lives". Hundreds of flyers were passed out, and despite being told to leave by City Hall security after 30 minutes (because we did not have a permit), participants managed to pass out all the flyers they had printed and continue to engage in conversation with people about the biolab.
You can contact Menino via phone: 617.635.4500, email: Mayor (at) cityofboston.gov or regular mail by writing to the Mayor's Office at 1 City Hall Plaza in Boston.
It would be useful for him (or at least someone who works for him) to have a real idea of what the people of Boston think about the biolab and his support for it.
If a City Council resolution were to be passed banning Level 4 labs, Menino would have the power to (and would) veto it. |
