"We Are Jews Who Stand for Humanity!"
07 Sep 2006
Boston, Mass. – Four weeks after their first demonstration against The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC), Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), American Jewish Committee (AJC) and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) who claim that the Jews of Boston are united in their support of Israel, 30 people gathered once again in front of 126 High Street to speak out: “Not in our name”, or as some Israeli Refusers have been known to chant: “Not with our bodies”.

At the core of today’s demonstration was the testimony of two Israeli young women, Anna Schlonsky and Oshra Bar, conscious objectors of the occupation and the war. Both women have declared pacifism in order to be exempted from serving in the Israeli military. “I have been called ‘anti-democratic’ and ‘anti-Israel’ simply because I do not believe we should be in the [occupied] territories; simply because I disagree with the government,” said Oshra.

Like most of the Jewish population of Greater Boston present today, Oshra and Anna feel that the media does not show their side of the story, “People in the United States are not aware that there is a strong Israeli voice against the government and the occupation.” There are currently 1666 Israeli soldiers and officers refusing to serve in the occupied territories, according to the U.S. branch of the Refuser Solidarity Network (http://www.refusersolidarity.net).

Davida Schiff, a 21-year-old woman from Somerville expressed the same concern, “I am appalled that main stream media only represents Israeli lobbyists and claim their believes as a generality! The JCRC does not speak in my name!”

Martin Federman, co-chair of The Jewish Voice for Peace of Greater Boston who organized today’s protest added, “The assumption was: as a Jew, you have to support Israel. Just like it was unpatriotic to speak against the war in Iraq, it’s anti-Semite to speak out against the Israeli war. But more and more people are coming out and speaking out against the position of big, Israeli lobby groups: they do not represent everyone in the American Jewish community!”

The group of 30 distributed flyers to passer-bys prompting comments such as “Jews against Israel” and spent most of the hour and a half expressing their concern over their voices being ignored . Right before bowing his head for a minute of silence honoring the victims of the conflict, Isaac Simon-Hodes added, “This position, the war, is a total betrayal of my religion. This is why I am here.”
