Somerville residents take action
26 Sep 2006
A CD blasting the reggae beats of the group “Spearhead” and holding a couple of symbolic rainbow-colored peace flags, a dozen residents of Somerville gathered at Davis Square this evening to urge their neighbors to take action. Mathew Hochman believes that now is the time, “During the Vietnam War, people didn’t start shouting bring the troops home before the fifth year!”

The Group distributed flyers, bumper stickers and encouraged passer-bys to call their representatives:Tuesday September 26th is the last day to call congress (1-888-355-3588 or 1-202-224-3121) and ask that your representative sign the declaration of peace.

“It is important to keep the force alive," said Abby Yanow. "Too many things come across the news everyday, we need to keep it in people’s minds.”

Marya Axner and Kate Cloud couldn’t agree more, “People have to work a lot more to support their families and can’t always make time- or remember to make time- to be activists!”

More importantly, today’s peace vigil was about the November 7th elections: Few know that in 139 cities and towns of the state of Massachusetts they will be asked to vote on a resolution to end the war. These districts have managed to petition the signatures of 200 voters in order to add to the ballot a “non-binding resolution to an immediate end of the war in Iraq.”

“Things are shifting!” added a hopeful Kate Cloud. “As the saying goes, first they ignore you, then they laugh at you. Then you win!”

What were they brought home to do?
26 Sep 2006
Reformists who refuse to call for the defeat of US imperialism, and instead use the popular front slogan to "bring them home", apparently forgot what happened after Hurricane Katrina: Bush and Kathleen Blanco brought Iraq-hardened troops "home" to "shoot to kill" the stranded victims of Hurricane Katrina.

These are not our troops. Soldiers: turn your guns around! Our enemy is at home.

Mobilize labor's power to defeat US imperialism!
