Giant Images Targeting BioTerror Lab Projected on Buildings in Downtown Boston
31 Oct 2006
On Monday night, October 30th, members of The Stop the Biolab Coalition used "Light Cannons" to project giant images onto buildings in the downtown Boston area. They utilized this creative technology to expose the true costs of Boston University’s proposed BioSafety Lab Level 4 (BSL4).

The 50 plus foot high photos and messages expressed concerns about the deadly germs, such as Ebola and Anthrax, that will be brought into Boston’s communities for use at the BSL4 in the Roxbury/South End area.

As Boston University prepares to break ground for the BSL4, residents of Boston say that it is impossible for the city to guarantee them safety from deadly diseases transported through Boston’s neighborhoods. Throughout the last three years Boston has seen the BSL4 as a Roxbury/South End issue, but the Coalition is making it clear that the impacts run far deeper than one community.

“I don’t want the plague coming through my neighborhood,” explained Christine Tellez, a resident of Jamaica Plain. “What happens if the FedEx truck gets in an accident? What happens if these deadly diseases get in our water?”

In March of last year a FedEx truck carrying Anthrax was involved in a collision in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Though no one was exposed to the Anthrax, many in the surrounding areas questioning their safety.

The incident in Canada together with the Boston University covered up of an accident in May 2004 where three researchers became infected with Tularemia, has citizens worried. The Stop the Biolab Coalition believes that Boston University cannot be trusted with the safety of Massachusetts’ residents.

“This is just one more example of Boston University not being honest with the community and not fully considering the impacts of this lab on Boston residents,” said Klare Allen of the Roxbury-based group Safetynet.

The Coalition will continue projecting these large images on buildings throughout the city over the next several days as part of a week-long effort to pressure officials to stop the approval of the BSL4.
