Boston Progressive Radio Silenced
28 Dec 2006
Boston's only progressive talk radio stations have been shut down and listeners are organizing to bring them back. Boston's only progressive talk radio stations, known as "Boston's Progressive Talk" at AM 1200 WKOX and 1430 WXKS, were abruptly terminated on Thursday, Dec. 21st to the dismay of loyal listeners. The stations now feature a Spanish language format.

Among those who had been featured on the stations were shows hosted by Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, Rachel Maddow and Bobby Kennedy Jr. of Air America as well as Stephanie Miller and Ed Schultz from the Jones Radio Network.
The owner of the stations, Clear Channel, had not yet dealt with such issues as low signal strength, lack of promotion, lack of local avertising or lack of a local host when it decided to change formats. In a Globe article from 12/20/06 CC announced that it had plans to increase signal strength from 10,000 to 50,000 watts for the new Spanish language programming.

Listeners of "Boston's Progressive Talk" have formed a Yahoo Group called Save_Progressive_Radio_Boston in order to bring progressive talk back to the Boston area. Currently most radio talk shows in the area reflect only the conservative viewpoint. All those who wish to have the option of hearing a progressive voice on the airwaves are encouraged to join the group.

Additionally, there is a website people can go to at which will soon have a link to a petition to Clear Channel demanding the return of progressive talk radio programming to the Boston area.

As the working draft of the petition points out: "The airwaves belong to the people to serve the needs of the people which includes serving the local community as well as offering an opportunity to hear diverse points of view. While there are already other Spanish-program stations in the Boston market and numerous conservative ralk radio stations and shows, there are NO OTHER progressive talk stations here and other media is not giving progressive issues and points of view reliable coverage. It is for these reasons WE URGE Clear Channel to reinstate Progressive Talk Radio in Boston!"

clear channel did the same thing in madison, wisconsin(which, like boston, has a long history of progressivism, leftism, and so forth). i hear froma friend that there was a huge uproar there, and air america has been reinstated. perhaps we can find out what folks did there to reverse this injustice? i'm not a fan of air america, but its better than NOTHING-- and certainly better than fucking La Mega. . . . .

They did advertise Al Franken on a Clear Channel billboard in Cambridge on Mass Ave. It sounds like leftist radio is just not commercially viable.

According to Federal law, the airwaves are a common asset owned by the American people "to serve the public interest" -- which includes serving all local communities that make up our city as well as offering an opportunity to hear diverse points of view.

In Boston, Progressives make up the majority of the listening audience. It is absurd to think that we cannot sell Progressive radio here. Since Clear Channel "silenced" Progressive talk, there are no other Progressive talk radio stations in the Greater Boston area and other local mainstream media have avoided the Progressive talk format altogether. We must let Clear Channel (and any other potential broadcaster) know that we need and value Progressive radio in Boston.

It is for these aforementioned reasons that WE URGE Clear Channel Radio to reinstate Progressive Talk Radio in Boston!

I doubt it.

"In Boston, Progressives make up the majority of the listening audience."

That's not true. Or at least there is no scientific or statistical basis to make the assertion.
