Sacco and Vanzetti Live! Aug. 23-25
15 Aug 2007
Sacco and Vanzetti 80th anniversary of their judicial murder. No more raids on migrant workers! No more death penalty! No more war on immigrants! No more war, period!

This August, Boston will remember the 80th anniversary of the execution of radical Italian immigrants Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti whose trial is widely regarded as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in American history. Calling attention to the continued repression of immigrants and radicals, the Sacco and Vanzetti Commemoration Society invites all to attend and participate in planned events.
For the second year in a row, organizers throughout Massachusetts have sought to bring public attention to the wrongful execution of the two Italian immigrant workers in 1927. We invoke our local history not only out of reverence for Sacco and Vanzetti, but to demonstrate how little has changed in the 80 years following their execution. Nationalist fearmongering and the repression of dissidents is as prevalent today as it was during the Red Scare in the early 20th century.

The way in which Arab and Latin@ immigrants are rounded up, detained and deported today under the pretext of the War on Terror and the War on Drugs is eerily similar to the Palmer Raid targeting immigrants in the 1920s. And whereas the overwhelming majority of developed nations have abolished the death penalty, the retention of capital punishment in the United States keeps the U.S. in alarmingly poor company with other countries notorious for human rights abuses.

Beginning with a gathering in Copley Square at 3PM on Thursday, August 23, a march will take place at 4PM ending with a rally in the North End.

On Friday, August 24, theater, music and poetry memorializing Sacco & Vanzetti will be performed at the Community Church of Boston, 565 Boylston Street, Copley Sq., from 7 to 11PM.

On Saturday, August 25, films about Sacco and Vanzetti will be screened at Encuentro5, 33 Harrison Avenue, 5th. Fl, Chinatown, Boston, from 7 to 11PM.
