Military Families Release Homemade Video to Challenge War Propaganda |

Thursday, Military Families Speak Out (based in Jamaica Plain) and Gold Star Families Speak Out members picked up a video camera and made a one and one-half minute piece to counter and challenge a $15 million ad campaign to push the Bush administration's Iraq war agenda.
Celeste and Dante Zappala produced a home made video and posted it online to counter-act a national campaign launched by Ari Fleischer, former press secretary to President George W. Bush, and its advocacy group Freedom's Watch, to pressure Congress to continue funding the war. |

The ad features wounded veterans and Gold Star families stating that if Congress were to end the war in Iraq , war Veterans' and Gold Star families' sacrifices will mean nothing. A media watchdog, Media Matters, noted that the advertisement erroneously links the war with Sept. 11, despite the fact that Iraq did not play any role in those attacks.
"We don't have $15 million, but we have the truth," said Celeste and Dante Zappala. "We have been so enraged by Ari Fleischer's propaganda campaign to prop up support for more death and destruction in Iraq." They are urging friends and supporters to circulate their own video, which features photos of one of their family members, Sgt. Sherwood Baker, killed in the war.
In their video, Celeste says, "Ari Fleisher has created a new campaign of fear and more deception.This war is a betrayal of our military and the democracy they've been charged to protect. Bring the troops home now, take care of them when they get here. Funding the war means killing the troops."
Celeste's son and Dante's brother, Sgt. Sherwood Baker, was killed in Iraq on April 26, 2004, while guarding the Iraq Survey Group who were searching for the non-existent weapons of mass destruction. Sgt. Baker was the first Pennyslvania National Guard soldier to die in combat since World War II. He was 30 years old and a caseworker for the mentally disabled before he was shipped to the war. Baker left behind a 9-year-old son.
