Free for All: Arabic Music from Gaza Fundraiser
13 May 2008
On Wednesday, April 30, a large coalition of local groups organized a fundraiser for children of Gaza to benefit the Middle East Children's Alliance and the Gaza Mental Health Foundation Inc. 492 Cafe managed sound for the event at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and is now releasing the Gaza Concert recordings. Freeman Z's report is detailed below.

492 Cafe is a Boston area media project with a mission: helping progressives to recognize the value of media, and moving forward to use media to amplify our voices.

We're especially excited about MOCHILLA, a Brandeis Student group that blends Arabic and Jazz musics. The Mochilla tracks are getting local airplay, and we want to encourage these kids to keep up their great work.

HILARY RANTISI was Emcee and NANCY MURRAY spoke (also posted for your ears.)

The event raised over $13,000.00

Organizers included Amy Hendrickson, Nancy Murray and Sherif Fam, host of This Week in Palestine, on WZBC. Fam will be honored along with Boston Palestine Film Festival organizers, and the crew of This Week in Palestine, which has a considerable overlap with the crew of 492 Cafe.

Freeman Z managed the job, and played a role in concert promotion, as well. ”This was a big shake-down for us as a team. We had a few tech problems, and we’re working them out collectively. Still, the Mochilla recordings are exceptional. Bill Hanley’s an amazing man, a true pioneer, and a free spirit. It’s an honor to have him on the team, teaching us the craft from his career experience, running the Newport Festivals, The Fillmore East, the Vietnam rallies ...even Johnson’s inauguration, and of course, Woodstock.”

492 Cafe crew at the concert included Founder Freeman Z, Steve Cornie, of WZBC's Truth and Justice Radio, and Bill "Woodstock" Hanley, "the Father of Festival Sound" More about Bill at

492 Cafe also provided sound at the May Day march and Copley rally, with the SoniKart, a battery-operated mega-megaphone (gigaphone?) that was famously arrested by Dick Cheney's henchmen, and returned by Boston police in hundreds of pieces.

the site serves mp3s and videos of interest to the community. Please enjoy the site, and contact us if you have a media issue with which we might help.

When people ask what we do, we tell them we are redefining media for the people. We never give up!
