Anti-War Sentiment in Boston Still Strong
13 Oct 2008
Several thousand peace activists took the streets of Boston October 11 to protest the 6th anniversary of Congress voting for war on Iraq. The rally started on Boston Common where are a large crowd on a sunny day heard anti-war speakers and musicians. The rally then marched south toward Copley Sq. and Newbury Street, back north through central Boston's downtown crossing shopping district, greeted by many interested onlookers. This action was one of many across the U.S. on October 11.

Among those present included Carlos and Melida Arredondo, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Code Pink, and several student anti-war groups. The event included a rally where several musicians and speakers participated.

Bush was also seen on the streets asking for change, but was largely ignored by the crowds.

From the October 11th Mobilizing Committee:

Connecting the catastrophic costs of the wars, now estimated at more than $1 trillion, to the country's growing economic crisis, demonstrators led by Honkfest marched through downtown Boston chanting "They Want Bailout - We Want Troops Out." Speakers at the rally called for an end to the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan and highlighted both the human toll on and the growing resistance among active duty soldiers and young veterans. "In growing numbers, soldiers in Iraq are seeking ways to speak out about the realities of this disastrous occupation," explained Carlos Harris, former US Army specialist. "We had with us today several active duty soldiers leading the march and a former staff sergeant speaking out powerfully from the stage. Military personnel need to know they do have the right to speak out and the American public needs to hear what they have to say."
