BOSTON – A diverse group of 30 Palestinian-Americans, Jewish Americans and supporters dramatized the US funded Israeli war crimes in Gaza with a "die-in" at the Israeli Consulate at 20 Park Plaza in Boston, MA. Demonstrators carried poster-sized images of the recent carnage in Gaza and read some of the names of the over 700 Palestinian dead as a result of US-funded Israeli aggression. Susan Barney, Rick Colbath-Hess, Ridgely Fuller, and Patrick Keaney, were arrested when they refused to leave the lobby of the consulate building, until Israel agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and to end its 18-month blockade on Gaza, which has prevented Palestinians from having food, medicine and electricity.

"On this 13th day of Israel's massacre of the people of Gaza, I take the name of Ahmad Radwan, one of over 700 human beings in Gaza whose lives have been brutally taken away by weapons made in this country and paid for by U.S. tax dollars," said Susan Barney, in a statement released to the press after being taken into police custody.
The United States gives $3 billion dollars of aid to Israel annually and provides US made F-16s, Apache helicopters and bunker buster bombs which have been used to fire on a mosque, a university and a clearly-marked UN school in recent days. "Israel is committing a shocking series of atrocities by using modern weaponry against a defenceless population," said Richard Falk, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories.
This demonstration is one of a number of protests which have been held in Boston since the Israeli attacks began over a week ago. The largest thus far has been a march of 1000 people from across the state of Massachusetts on January 3rd. This Saturday, January 10, 2009, the Palestinian community has called for a funeral march starting in Copley Square at Noon, to mourn the Palestinian dead and echo calls for an immediate ceasefire.
Statement by Susan Barney, one of the demonstrators arrested calling for a ceasefire in Gaza:
On this 13th day of Israel's massacre of the people of Gaza, I take the name of Ahmad Radwan, one of over 700 human beings in Gaza whose lives have been brutally taken away by weapons made in this country and paid for by U.S. tax dollars. By engaging in this symbolic action, I add my voice to the worldwide collective anguish and outrage over Israel's war crimes against the people of Gaza.
The people of Gaza are being held captive while Israel drops bombs on their homes, schools, mosques, markets and universities. I am in captivity, as are the Palestinian people, while the real criminals, the Israeli government, are free to continue the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people that started with their violent expulsion 60 years ago and continues today with this genocide. Through my actions I stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza to remind Americans that we must do all we can to stop this horrific genocide. |
