Torture Accountability Action Day in Harvard Square
26 Jun 2009
Cambridge--Anti-torture protesters gathered in "the pit" in Harvard Square today to demand a stop to torturing prisoners held in Guantanamo and other US facilities. Some wore orange jumpsuits and black hoods to emulate the garb of detainees. Several speakers spoke out against torture by the Bush regime.

In response to an ACLU lawsuit, the Pentagon had been court-ordered to release photos of detainee abuse in US facilities from 2001-2006. These photos, including many from Bagram, Afghanistan, where the detention facilities have been doubled to hold 60,000 detainees, would have shown that torture was pervasive, not an aberration. But Obama blocked the release. Early 2009, four torture memos revealed the sadistic detail with which Bush's lawyers orchestrated the torture of detainees.

The Obama administration is continuing indefinite detention, CIA rendition, Bush's executive powers, and denying Bagram detainees the right to challenge their detention, saying prosecution of torturers would stop them from "moving forward." Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi knew about the torture as early as 2002,but did nothing to stop it.
