Protest for Bradley Manning in Back Bay |

On Saturday, December 15, about 50 protesters held a rally and march in Back Bay to raise awareness of the plight of Bradley Manning. Manning is an Army intelligence analyst who is accused of leaking more than 250,000 classified diplomatic cables to Wikileaks. He is currently being held in solitary confinement while not allowed to exercise, or sleep between the hours of 5 AM and 8 PM. |

The protest was organized by local members of Anonymous, a group dedicated to freedom of information and expression. They are best known for organizing protests against the Church of Scientology and launching on line attacks against the web sites of organizations involved in copyright enforcement.
The protest started in Copley Square with participants, some masked, gathering to hand out flyers and discuss Manning and Wikileaks. After more people showed up a march departed up Boylston Street and back down Newbury. Marchers chanted loudly and handed out more flyers to passers-by. Police interference was mostly absent, with only a pair of cops in a paddy wagon eyeballing the protest in Copley. They did not follow the march.

The defense of these individuals who are under American and world governmental attack for simply doing honorable things in the old democratic tradition is important in the struggle to preserve all our dwindling democratic rights. The defense of the public square that I have been at pains to talk about lately, post-Arizona January shoot-out massacre, starts for us with the defense of Manning and Assange. I would also point out that in Boston this defense was, unlike the issue of opposition to the the Obama Afghanistan war policies, led by young people. Hooray! |
