Statement in Support of Chuck Turner
26 Jan 2011
Yesterday, Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner was sentenced to three years in federal prison for accepting a bribe. Turner has long been known for supporting radical causes and standing by his constituents, and the circumstances of his trial point to a concerted effort on the part of the Justice Department to silence his voice. Community Church of Boston's Jason Lydon has released the following statement.
Yesterday's sentencing of our dear friend Chuck Turner is an outrage! The courthouse was filled with his supporters, including many of us, and we know that the struggle for justice is far from over. This is a time for prayer, as one of our founders John Haynes Holmes articulated it, "Prayer is attention unfolding into intention. It is purpose, resolution, dedication. Which brings us face to face with the greatest of all spiritual discoveries - that if our prayers are to be answered we must answer them ourselves; that we are already answering our prayers in the mere expression of the desire that they be fulfilled." We must answer the prayers of our community and bring justice to our city and seek justice for what has been done to Chuck Turner.

The three year sentence handed down by Judge Woodlock was outrageous and a continuation of the targeting of Chuck because of his voice. Both the government prosecutor and Judge Woodlock criticized Chuck for letting down his constituency and misleading us to believe that the prosecution was based in racism and a federal agenda focused on dismantling the leadership of radical Black officials. We know and we have seen that the misleading has been done by the government, a reality that did not begin and will not end with the attack on Chuck Turner. We, at the Community Church of Boston, know that the FBI has the intention of rooting out those who stand up against the white supremacist system it protects. It has happened to us, it has happened to radicals around the country, and we will not let it go unchallenged.

Chuck has called us to push forward investigating the United States Attorney's Office and we must take the time to heed that call. It is clear that former U.S. Attorney Sullivan operated inappropriately and with the intention of taking down oppositional forces, specifically Black leadership in Boston. We must be part of a process that holds these actions accountable.

Chuck may be going into prison, but he will not do his time alone. It is our responsibility to not forget all of the work he has done for us. We will be there for him wherever he is sent and be sure he receives letters, money for his canteen, and visits to show him love. Our support of Chuck Turner the individual is deeply linked to our support for the radical change we wish to see in the world. We must live our values and walk our walk if we plan to build the beloved community we dream of.

28 Jan 2011
I live far, far away in sweden now, but have been following the news about chuck turner with dismay and anger. i hope the appeals court spares him the additional injustice of 3 years in prison after being targeted by rascist fbi emntrappment and the like. i lived in boston many years, and looked up to chuck alot for the speaking and action i both saw and heard about him doing. and he is STILL an inspiration to me. thank you for posting this.
