An eviction blockade organized by City Life/Vida Urbana was successful in preventing the eviction of a Hyde Park family. |
|
About 80 people gathered at the home of Herbert St. Simon to prevent constables from evicting him and his family as part of a foreclosure by Aurora Bank. Chanting and waving signs, most of the blockaders marched in a circle on the sidewalk, while a few brave souls locked themselves to the interior of the house with chains.
While an attempt to obtain a temporary restraining order preventing the eviction failed, word came from Aurora's lawyers that the eviction would not proceed that day. Aurora also promised to file a new 48 hour notice of eviction on Friday.
The location of the blockade was changed to Hyde Park from Austin Street in Milton. The switch was due to US Bank, who had planned to foreclose on the Milton property, caving after a visit to their 1 Federal St. headquarters from a CLVU delegation. |
