Tuesday March 29, 2011 - In the moments before rush hour this morning, Tuesday March 29, 2011, several concerned residents of Jamaica Plain hung banners from a billboard on the roof 467 Centre Street, to say "NO" to Whole Foods's plans to open a store in Jamaica Plain's Hyde Square. The banners read, "An Affordable JP is Truly a 'JP For All' - NO WHOLE FOODS" in both English and Spanish. |

As seen elsewhere, Whole Foods will accelerate the displacement of lower income residents in the neighborhoods surrounding it by encouraging landlords to drive up rent prices in an attempt to attract more affluent tenants. If we truly want a "JP for All," we must stand up for affordability and cultural diversity in Jamaica Plain. All residents of JP, as well as those throughout Boston, must unite together to support our fellow neighbors, as well as existing and future local businesses, by saying "NO" to Whole Foods in Jamaica Plain. |
