A coalition of bank tenant associations held a protest against Bank of America in Copley Square yesterday morning. Led by City Life/Vida Urbana (CLVU), the protest was meant to call attention to the predatory lending and unfair foreclosures practiced by BoA and other banks. |
|
CLVU is known for organizing blockades to protect homeowners and renters from being evicted from their homes as a result of foreclosure. The coalition includes similar groups from Lynn, Worcester, Springfield, Chelsea, Providence and the Merrimack Valley.
Attendance was estimated at over 200, with many being bused in from around Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Foreclosure victims spoke about their experiences, and organizers introduced their groups and led the crowd in chants. Unfortunately, a planned sit-in at a BoA branch across the street was called off at the last minute by organizers for unexplained reasons.
Police presence was minimal. The handful of officers present were outnumbered by legal observers sent by the National Lawyers Guild, and made no attempt to disperse protesters. |
