Flashmobs Support Florida Tomato Pickers Union
23 May 2011
On Sunday May 22, the radical cheerleading squad Boston Sass Attack led a flashmob tour of local grocery stores to draw attention to the struggle of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW).Hitting two Stop and Shops and a Trader Joe's, the group conducted a choreographed dance routine set to a rewritten version of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time."

The CIW is an association of tomato pickers based in Immokalee, Florida. Tomato pickers are some of the lowest-paid workers in the country. Paid by the pound of produce picked, their piece rate has not been raised since the early eighties. The CIW is conducting a campaign to convince large restaurant and grocery chains to pay tomato pickers one more cent per pound, an amount that would nearly double wages. So far McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell and other fast food corporations have agreed to the raise, but Stop and Shop and Trader Joe's are dragging their feet.
