The assembly began with working groups discussing various logistical issues. The full assembly was then convened, with representatives from each working group reporting back to the group and raising any questions that required assembly-wide consideration.
Food working group: They promised one meal per day throughout the occupation, and water available 24/7. The assembly decided on a 3:00 PM serving time. Everyone was asked to bring their own cups, plates, etc.
Outreach working group: Is planning neighborhood canvassing, as well as outreach on local college campuses. Times and places of canvassing sessions TBA,
Arts and Culture working group: This group is coordinating music and entertainment. They are planning a puppet show, musical performances, a song book and a drag show. In addition they will be holding workshops on topics like radical consent, herbalism, the Federal Reserve system, and much more.
Medical working group: Responsible for first aid and preventive medicine. They urged everyone to wash their hands regularly during the occupation, and announced a health and safety training for 5:30 PM at Encuentro 5, 33 Harrison Ave before the next general assembly.
Legal working group: These folks are coordinating legal observer training with the National Lawyers Guild, as well as committing to supporting anyone who gets arrested at the occupation. They urged everyone to avoid drugs and alcohol during the occupation and requested that the assembly decide whether to apply for a permit.
Tactical working group: This was divided into three subgroups. Means and Methods will concentrate on recruiting and outreach, Research will look into finding sympathetic organizations, target selection and gathering intelligence, and Logistics and Security will focus on trash pickup, cleanliness, and security against the police and infiltrators.
Media: Also divided into three subgroups. The Tech team will provide wireless communication for all, the Media Relations team will handle requests from the media, and the Public Information subgroup will be the voice of the occupation, handling official communications and press releases. They requested that individuals speaking to the media make clear that they were not speaking for the entire occupation.
Following the working group reports the assembly took up the questions of whether to apply for a permit, and when to begin the occupation. By wide margins in both cases, and after lengthy discussion, it was decided to begin on the evening of Friday September 30 and not to attempt to obtain permits from any government body.
The next assembly will be held at Encuentro 5 at 6:00 PM on Thursday September 29. |
