Boston, Mass.-March 22, 2012:
Over a thousand Verizon workers and union supporters rallied and marched for a fair contract and against Verizon corporate greed. The march started at Dewey Square, former location
of Occupy Boston; then proceeded through downtown to the Verizon Wireless store, and then to Verizon headquarters a few blocks away Here are links to some videos and photos I took--

Hundreds of Verizon Workers, Allies to Rally Against Corporate Greed Thursday
Company’s anti-worker initiatives, tax dodging prompt mass action in Hub’s Financial District

BOSTON, MA – Verizon workers will be joined by hundreds of allies Thursday at 5:00pm for a downtown Boston march and rally against corporate greed. The demonstration, set to launch from Dewey Square, is part of a nationwide day of action to call attention to the billion-dollar profits made by Verizon and other major corporations in the face of mass layoffs, wage cuts and other attacks on workers’ rights. Concerned citizens are set to participate in hundreds of actions across the country, including several in Massachusetts.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) has made more than $32.5 billion in profits over the last three years, paying its top executives over $280 million in salary and bonuses. But when it comes to the tens of thousands of employees who made Verizon’s success possible, the communication’s giant claims poverty – sending thousands of American jobs overseas and pushing to gut pensions and health benefits for employees, retirees and workers who get hurt on the job, all in pursuit of so-called “cost savings”.

Workers and allies have cried foul, pointing to a 2011 report by the non-partisan Institute on Taxation & Economic Policy that shows Verizon received a combined federal tax refund of $951 million over the last three years, on top of the company’s $32.5 billion profit. According to the study, Verizon also capitalized on $12.3 billion in additional tax breaks over the same time period – making it one of the top three tax-subsidized corporations in America. Massachusetts residents cite the glaring contradiction as one of many motivating factors in Thursday’s march and rally against Verizon.

Thursday’s demonstration is organized by Communications Workers of America Local 1400, Greater Boston Central Labor Council, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2222, Jobs with Justice, Massachusetts State AFL-CIO and MASSUNITING.
