GE Labor Union Protest in Lynn - Workers Demand a Share of General Electric's $16 Billion in Profits

Lynn, MA - The General Electric Company ( GE ) is entering negotiations for a contract with the unionized labor force barganing through the International Union of Electrical - Communications Workers of American Local 201.
General Electric has been very successful and profits are at all time highs. The company rewards top management with a lot of money. But the company wants to get workers in Massachusetts, and across the country, to accept wages that match wages the comany could get on the world market.
Union representative Business Agent Ric Casilli is on the negotiating team, "There have to be improvements, no more takeaways."
The union held a rally in Lynn at at noon at Fairchild Street and Western Avenue. Across the US fellow workers rallied near their GE workplaces to fight for better wages.
Negotiators will start May 31, 2015 to prepare for the June 1 negotiations. Casilli says the goal is to reach a settlement by June 21, but sometimes a 10-day extension is given. He said there are very important items the committee will be pursuing, including medical coverages and benefits for current employees and retirees, improvements in pensions and job security provisions for all plans.
Casilli said that if GE presented a proposal to cut some items, the committee and the union are ready to fight by going on strike and shutting the work sites down if they do not agree. He said medical plans for retirees over 65 could be jeopardy, and said GE wants to cut the 20 percent that the supplemental medical plan covers after the 80 percent is covered through medicare.
“Success for me would be for GE to use their 16 billion dollars and stop shifting any medical cost on employees,” Casilli said.
Peter Capano, the IUE-CWA Local 201 president, said, “We are willing to do whatever it takes to keep the benefits that we have. We are showing GE workers are standing together across the country to get improvements to our benefits,” Capano said.
A spokesperson for the company defends the 'race to the bottom' strategy GE is persuing in negotiations. GE spokesman Richard Gorham said the company provides highly beneficial jobs and competitive benefit packages to its workers and that it would like to continue that for the next contract. He said GE’s goal is to negotiate a competitive and fair package. Compared to a worker at McDonald's or Walmart - the wages are higher. The union hopes to see other workers paid more. “We provide attractive wages and benefits that compare very favorably with other leading manufacturers of the communities that we work in,” Gorham said.
Gorham says GE is confident at the end that the company will negotiate a fair and competitive contract that provides great jobs for employees, wages and benefits, but also allows the businesses to operate competitively in the markets that it serves

All IUE-CWA GE Locals are holding Contract 2015 protests at their plants on this day. GE retirees will be protesting this same day at the GE Shareholders Meeting in Oklahoma City and buses of union members from IUE-CWA Local 1004 (GE Strothers plant in Arkansas City, Kansas) will be joining the retirees.

With National Contract negotiations opening on June 1, 2015 in New York City, union members need to deliver a strong message that we want better pensions and improved affordable medical and an end to the huge cost shifting that has been thrown on our backs the last 4 years We also need to let GE know we will fight to protect our retirement benefits and that GE’s recent elimination of such benefits on salaried exempt employees was outrageous.

A corporation making over $16 Billion in annual profits out of its Industrial Divisions has no reason to treat its employees and our members in this horrible fashion.

Please PUNCH out and join us in a short but important CONTRACT 2015 protest. Wear your red CBC T-shirts for the April 23 protest. If you do not have one yet- wear a blue Local 201 T-shirt. Remember to punch back in.

...can be fashioned another way as well, to wit....

"A corporation making over $16 Billion in annual profits out of its Industrial Divisions has no imperative to treat with its current employees and union members AT ALL! It can find more cost-effective and more appreciative workers elsewhere, if that becomes necessary."

Just something to consider. It's the company's profits, not the hired hands. If the hired hands want to share in the profits, then they should invest in the company....or form their own company.
