Harvard Dining Workers 'Tentative' Agreement to End Strike - 25 Oct 2016
26 Oct 2016
Cambridge, MA - After a long evening of negotiations that went past midnight the Harvard dining services labor union UNITE HERE Local 26 president Brian Lang emerged from 124 Mount Auburn Street, the Harvard Administration building the negotiations took place in, to announce to a small crowd that the labor union workers had "accomplished all our goals."
The crowd assembled included striking workers and other supporters and students. The students had organized a class walkout earlier in the day when 500 reportedly walked out of class to show support for the striking workers. Students had marched across campus and occupied the lobby of the negotiating building on Mount Auburn Street. The students sat in till about 10:30pm when the police convinced the occupiers to leave peacefully.

The crowd dwindled toward midnight, but did manage to form a circle in arms and sing 'We Shall Overcome' in the chilly night air.

The issues of contention related to year round wages and changes to health insurance. The union negotiators say that the contract will be put to a thirty member board, and then to the general membership for a vote. The dining halls could be back operating by Thursday morning - 27 October 2016.

As the negotiating team came out after one in the morning the group of supporters and workers knew there was a victory because of the expressions on the negotiating teams faces. Some where crying, but Brian Lang was smiling as he announced the end of the strike with a win for the workers.
