Boston's Food Not Bombs still truckin' after 25 years
14 Mar 2005
Back in 1980, resourceful people in Cambridge realized that their local grocery stores and farmer's markets threw out an incredible amount of food...tons. After a night at the Haymarket Farmer's Market, for example, a giant truck would literally have to plow the food the unsold fruits and vegetables into an enormous trash heap. Dumpsters at local supermarkets contained food that was only cosmetically damaged. The line between food on the shelf and food in the trash was very thin...perfectly edible food was being wasted to a mind-boggling degree.

Boston "Food Not Bombs" is Still Truckin' after 25 Years
Meanwhile, an intense protest was raging in New Hamshire against the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant. Activists recovered wasted food from the streets of Boston and made meals for the protesters. There was so much market-wasted food that they decided to share it locally with their hungry neighbors and people without homes.

From the spark of these resourceful and generous people grew a project that has kept on trucking for the last 25 years. Waves of people have moved in, out of, and through Boston Food Not Bombs, gathering together around their shared hunger for food and real interaction. Now, hundreds of autonomous chapters exist throughout the world.
