Students Confront Recruiters with Community and Music
27 Feb 2006
On Saturday, February 25, residents of the greater Boston area came together outside of the Tremont Street Military Recruitment Center to resist the recruitment of their friends, families, classmates and peers. Almost all attendees were local high school or college students, who are particularly concerned that the military is allowed on school campuses. The demonstration was called by members of the Radical Youth Alliance, an organization of dedicated youth throughout the area who work together on a variety of issues but focus on resisting the war.

The Radical Youth Alliance has held numerous demonstrations outside of the same recruitment center, but unlike previous gatherings, organizers wanted to make this one different. “At the beginning of the year we had a few protests against recruitment where we passed out flyers and held up signs. This time we wanted to do something more creative and community-oriented,” said Anna Rushford, one of the main organizers.

Eric Ginsburg, co-founder of the organization continued, “We weren’t sure how to accomplish that, but Anna came up with the idea to have people play music, read poetry and bring food. I think that’s why this demonstration was so successful- the music got people excited.” Music ranged from students playing bongo drums to others strumming ukuleles and guitars, leading a sing-a-long with a chorus of “Stop this… war!”
Over 500 flyers were passed out to people walking by.

Some of the flyers explained how military recruiters lie in order to trick potential enlistees, while other flyers explained what the Radical Youth Alliance and their allies were opposing. The flyers emphasized that the problem is not just one war or one president, but with the system of militarism. The flyer ended by saying that “students should never have to sign their life over in order to earn money to survive or attend college.”

Spirits remained high despite the cold weather and snow, with approximately fifty people in attendance overall. Many brought food to share, including bags of cookies with facts about recruitment written on them. Some held signs, including one informing people that 90% of female veterans report being sexually harassed or abused while in the military, though the actual number may be higher due to an unwillingness to report incidences. Many of the signs were brightly colored and artistically impressive.
The demonstration was part of an anti-war campaign called Operation: Over. According to their website, Operation: Over is a “direct action campaign targeting all local links to the war and the forces behind it, from the military recruiters occupying our schools to the authorities planning a bioweapons lab in Roxbury to the corporations profiting off the murder of a people from their offices downtown.” The Radical Youth Alliance is an independent organization and was started before Operation: Over, but many of the radical youth have begun to plan actions that will be part of the larger Operation: Over campaign this spring. Saturday’s demonstration was the first of the planned actions.

if your problem with this article or the message of the demonstration is that picky, then this was clearly very successful.

You should know I was pulling your leg.If you want to get raped and abused join the Army. They do a great job of breaking you down and then turning you into a killing machine. It's alot like torture in boot camp.Mind control and pain with alot of fear mixed in.They want you to become a psychopath killer and then send you to Iraq.Keep up the protests. The recruiters hate to see you, because it ruins their cigarette breaks outside.

I was fortunate enough to have served in the US military and your portrayal of basic training is off by a wide margin. Please consult a civilian who has attended Basic Training to get a better picture of what it is like.
Thanks.
Peace-

what are you talking about? there is no portrayal of basic training here. this demonstration was about the military and recruitment in general. you've missed the point, probably on purpose.

Confronting Feminist Liars

If Eric can fudge statistics on one direction, anyone can fudge them in another direction. No one here is qualified to say whether false accusations of sexual harassment are statistically higher or lower than unreported cases of sexual harassment.

Any real media company could research those facts before making a claim.

there will always be people who lie, particularly ones in position of power, or ones who have something to gain by lying... like the military, like recruiters, like politicians

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF ARMAMENTS (amen)
-THE HOLY HAND GRENADE OF ANTIOCH-
And Saint Atilla raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, 'O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that, with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy.' And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu-- MAYNARD:
Skip a bit, Brother.
SECOND BROTHER:
And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'
The Horror of Censorship
02 Mar 2006
Ah yes, the wonder of alternative free speech is the Boston IMC. Sophie loves to use the terms "empty" and "policy violation" to censor opinions with which she does not agree. why does she censor the posts of FLIPSIDE? because he is a "troll" of course. Or is he a "racist?" These are just terms that are thrown our to discredit an individual or his point of view because. Those who use such terms are simply "intollerant." Oh my. I just did it. Oh no, I said it again! I have to stop saying it. Ahh I did it again!

Oh noes, Flipshady is getting his posts deleted!

This must be censorship, since MC Cracka adds so much content to the IMC.

It's not like his posts lack substance and are merely intended to annoy, in accordance with his repeated endorsements of offensive behavior for its own sake...

Wait, what?

If brains were gunpowder, there wouldn't be enough in the crowd of students to blow a nose. If you measure success by failure, then yes your protest was a success. You are seen as what you are, a bunch of whitebread kids without a clue.
