Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA
02 Mar 2006
Providence, RI--Prison officials in Rhode Island are worried. Their crimes are being exposed.

Michael Walsh, a 30 year-old construction laborer from East Providence, RI, is being held in Minimum Security at the Adult Correctional Institution (ACI) of Rhode Island. On February 18, Valentines Day, he says that prison guards preformed an anal cavity search on him. They accused him of smuggling contraband, and in a depraved act reminiscent of the crimes of Abu Ghraib, forced Walsh to eat his own feces. Walsh says they then denied him the use of the sink and a toothbrush all day. Walsh also says that ACI officers beat him on the face with a telephone book.

Michael Walsh's lawyer, Kenneth A. Schreiber, said at a press conference that he was investigating to prepare a civil-rights lawsuit against all responsible parties.

Walsh is serving a short sentence for a non-violent violation of a probation he received for a shoplifting charge. He is due to be released in March.

Rhode Island director of corrections, A. T. Wall, has disciplined nine ACI staff: one has already returned to work and the other eight are on paid leave. He promises an investigation, and will undoubtedly blame individual officers for "going too far". But the only thing unusual about this act of prison torture is that the victim has had the courage to fight back against his oppressors.

The ACI and all prisons in the US are little more than work-houses and concentration camps for the working class, particularly the nationally oppressed minorities. The US Bureau of Justice statistics reports that 60 percent of state and federal prisoners are black or hispanic, when they each make up only about twelve percent of the US population. Walsh was convicted of shoplifting. But the owners of the retail industry, Rhode Island's biggest private employer, profit from tens of thousands of cashiers and clerks who make a median wage of $9.05 per hour. They rarely have health insurance. These retail chains are responsible for the poverty of thousands of Rhode Islanders. But as of today, no CEOs have been prosecuted for grand theft.

Walsh and thousands of other working class prisoners across the United States are victims of the "war at home", which is not just an anti-war slogan but a social and political reality of imperialism. The intense competition for ever-greater profits drives the imperialists to slash wages, benefits, and social programs for workers in the imperialist centers. The imperialists' regime of police and prison repression must become ever harsher to defend a social order which promises the average worker nothing but a life of toil and sacrifice, in the midst of a mirage of extravagant opulence that he or she can never hope to attain. The working class, not a foreign government, is the enemy that the imperialists fear most. The instant the working class becomes conscious that the capitalists' laws and their police state, no matter how brutal, can not contain it, it has already won the battle and the parasitic class of millionaires that has oppressed it so long is doomed.

A little-reported fact is that many of the worst Abu Ghraib guards honed their skills in the United States, in our prisons before being shipped overseas. Their tactics attracted international attention then but, within "Fortress America," they may have gone largely unnoticed. The Match (an anarchist periodical out of Tucson, Arizona) mentioned this last year, I believe.

Is anyone in prison really guilty ???

I agree that if this guy's story is true it's completely infuriating, and I'm sure that this sort of abuse does in actuality occur relatively frequently across the country, which is terrible. But otherwise, you really come off sounding like a complete nutjob. But I guess that's why I visit this site, it's a nice reminder to me that, while I consider myself "liberal", the left can be every bit as psychotic as the right and that when one side makes fun of the other, it is the extremists who become the examples of the opponent. This site has really shown me all the attitudes that the right makes fun of, and I can't really blame them for it either.

"The imperialists' regime of police and prison repression. . . ."

Wow. Just wow. Psycho.

noname, glad to know you're visiting the site. yes, it takes a while to learn that what you see as "psycho" is true... read some chomsky & zinn, darlin', it will open your eyes.

I'm actually black male, but there is of course no way for me to prove that to you.

I also vote democrat, though I imagine here little distinction is made between democrat and republican. I also don't own a gun and only have one first name (I'm not Billy Bob, for isntance). Consider your worldview shattered.

Wanna see who voted for Patriot Act 2? Go to: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm
Yea, your Senators voted for it! (Unless you're from Vermont.)
Re: Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA
03 Mar 2006
given that the republicans could have passed the patriot act without democrat approval, the fact that such a large vote in favor of the act was reached means that the republicans compromised at least a little in order to get a more convincing vote. considering the democrats have no majorities, i consider them to be doing their job by reaching any compromise they can in a situation where no compromise is even necessary.

but hey, i'm a realist, that's what separates us. you can be an idealist and accomplish nothing or a realist and accomplish something (albeit something small in this case, but something nonetheless). i prefer to accomplish something.
Re: Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA
03 Mar 2006
so, noname, gives us examples on how you "accomplish" things. or do you think dissent is anti-democratic? you are not making a very good argument...
Re: Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA
03 Mar 2006
did i say dissent is anti-democratic? all i'm saying is i think the tone of the article indicates to me the writer has beliefs that i consider to be psychotic. i'm not at all saying he (and others) shouldn't have them or shouldn't stand up for them. nor am i saying that you shouldn't be allowed to think that my beliefs are psychotic. i don't even think that you think i shouldn't be allowed to have my beliefs, so why would you think i think you shouldn't be allowed to have yours?

and on political parties and realism/idealism, i'm just explaining why i choose realism and a major party to idealism and another party. you're free to choose whatever party/belief you like, and i'm free to think whatever i want about your choice as you are about mine. i certainly would never claim dissent to be anti-democratic, that's just absurd. but it's also absurd to think that just because someone thinks you're nuts means they also think your beliefs shouldn't be allowed.

Abusing/Torturing prisoners is just another way for prison guards and US Military personnel to wave the American flag and show what their "pariotism" is really all about !
Re: Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA
03 Mar 2006
well, it's your choice of words that confound me. what's so psychotic about "The imperialists' regime of police and prison repression. . . ." Is that you don't believe police and prison repression in the US exists? Is it that you don't think that we live under the most powerful empire? Is it that it is the same empire that enslaved prisoners and that hasn't been able to cope with a democratic Haiti?

You don't agree, yes, I understand that. It's the psychosis label that doesn't make any sense.
Re: Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA

Instead of placing the burden of Mr. Walsh's imprisonment on the retail industry, lets look at the fact that he broke the law by shoplifting (to begin with). However degrading his treatment was, you can be certain that he will be greatly rewarded by our justice system in the form of a grand monetary settlement. Shit luck, as they say?

As he should be.

noname why do you keep using the word "psychotic"? there is nothing psychotic about anything anyone has said on this post. just because a view is too extreme in your eyes, doesn't make it psychotic.

awesome article.
Re: Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA

sure it does, "psychotic" is relative. i'm sure plenty of people reading this website would consider someone who wanted to ban abortion psychotic (and i am not someone who would want to do that, before a different discussion begins).
