Feminism Meets Anarchism at Boston Gathering
14 Mar 2006
On Saturday, March 4th, people from Boston and other cities gathered in Copley Square for an annual conference called "La Rivolta!" Workshops on indigenous women's resistance, international trafficking of sex workers, and anarchist parenting tied together the feminist and anarchist perspectives.

For the story, listen to the radio piece (posted as a .mp3 audio file).

I really liked what Darby says in this interview, very articulate way of expressing the issue of anarchism and reforms that support people’s struggles. Plus I agree totally that the word anarchism most often obscures the actual values and principles of the anarchist tradition. The label is not that important - work for the ideals!

Favorite quotes:
"Maybe a hedonist approach is... loving people and myself."

"I think [anarcho-feminism] is about... deconstructing systems that hold power over other people"

"One of my main oppositions to the way [sex] trafficking is discussed is that it increases the power of the state, particularly the power of the state over women's bodies, over migrants bodies, and over everyone's sexuality."

"Small changes and reforms can have a really huge impact on many people's lives, and we should never settle for a revolt, we should always be fighting for a revolution... But I saw too many people using the excuse of revolution and not reform as a way to keep from doing anything meaninful."

"An important point is how to share these [anarcho-feminist] ideas with other people... Instead of expecting other people to come to these movements.. to not be so insular and include yourself in other ways. To want to be included in other communities."

Is the anarcha feminist on the left wearing a Red Sox cap? I guess it matches the red and black motiff...

It's just, you know, not something you expect from revolutionaries.

Professional sports is just nationalism, jingoism, and corporate greed. I don't see why or how an anarchist can justify being a Red Soxs fan, never mind wearing and endorsing the team's logo.

No Logo anyone?

hi from turkey,
we are very small anarcist feminist group.ı (and my group) believe anarcist-feminist movement very important for us and world and liberty ofcourse..
with solidarity...

bilge, welcome to boston imc. it's great to hear there are people in turkey working to process through the patriarchy which we all face. it's unusual for me to think about anarchists in the muslim world, especially women! usually in the media we only hear about 'terrorists' or 'dictators' or 'fundamentalists,' and they are always men. americans need to know more about people like you.
good luck with your organizing. you will always have comrades here in boston. i hope we can meet sometime, maybe next year at the next la rivolta.

I always wonder about so-called feminists who complaign about 'patriarchy'.

What about those of us who are from a matriarchy where the women are out of controll and domineering over the men in the clan? Why don't I ever hear anything about what men in situations like that have to face?

It seems to me that a lot of feminists are man-hating. And being a gay person who doesn't display outwardly that I am Feminists often mistake me for 'the evil chovenist' which I am not.
But I get to observe how so-called open-minded femists treat 'straight' men. And I get this hate thing that is really ugly. And then next I see them nurturing their toddler.

So I guess I don't get feminism at all. Seems like a sad form of mental illness, all that anarchist hate and misantropy.

I saw what feminist delusions did to my sisters. I see what it does to people on the left who like this delusion. You are ready to do all kinds of hating of religious people because they are traditional and don't believe in your idea that female only parents are OK. It's not OK to demonize religious people because they disagree with you or to prevent religious from adopting because you got favorable people in the government.

I think that feminism is a betrayal of men in very many ways. You don't look for the reformation of the human soul but for the destruction of half of them, the males of the human race.

In any case I am sure that all who read this, in your group think delusion, will immediatly see me as a villin. How dare I pee all over your self-righteousness and question your common delusions? But that is what open media allows. Let the sun shine down onto the festering mess of other-people idol beliefs and show you how you seem to teh rest of us.
Re: Feminism Meets Anarchism at Boston Gathering

i have never once met a feminist wo advocated the destruction of men, and i know a lot of feminists. patriarchy is an enormous problem in evey aspect of society. just sit back and look, and you'll see that in many situations, men often automaticly feel the need to take over. i am guilty of it my self. and yes there is a lot of anger from many feminists, but a lot of that anger is justified. women are extremely marginalized, whether you notice or not. even in radical surroundings men marginalize women, let alone in the mainstream where people deny patriarchy and sexism. and of course in some situations women dominate and i am not condoning that. however male domnitaion is far far more prevalent.

and as for anarcha-feminists being hateful, many of the radical women i know are far more opening and friendly to me that most men. and in the cases where women and girls do distrust men, there are usually reasons.

"in the cases where women and girls do distrust men, there are usually reasons."

in the cases where whites and cab drivers do distrust blacks, there are usually reasons.
