Poverty in Boston, What Poverty?
new_orleans.jpgThat’s exactly what an editor for the business section at the Boston Globe said during class at Harvard when I proposed writing a story about the correlation between the rise in crime and poverty in our city. I was dumbfounded and almost answered, “All you have to do is look outside your window,” as I remembered the men standing day after day on the street corners looking for work at my Somerville neighborhood. Then again, I didn’t know where the editor lived and the suburbs isn’t exactly a Boston hub for the homeless. The story idea was shut down, and we both moved on with our privileged lives.

The Great American Boycott of 2006 or a “day without immigrants” is a nationwide general strike and economic boycott to protest the anti-immigrant sentiments and actions across the country. The NOHR4437 national coalition, which has its stronguest roots in Los Angeles, California, is calling for full amnesty and dignity for the millions of undocumented workers presently in the U.S.

Modified Ribbons Distributed Across Boston in Remembrance of Lives Lost in Iraq
ribbons2.jpgOn Monday, March 20, 8 people rode their bikes all over Boston distributing modified "Support Your Troops" ribbons. Over 200 ribbons had been collected over the last two years. The ribbons were spray-painted black with the message "100,000 Dead" accompanied by a peace sign inscribed in white. "We wanted to show that for some people, life isn’t just 'business as usual': our Iraqi sisters and brothers are being killed everyday. The ribbon is also a popular symbol of comodified patriotism: we wanted to transform that into a somber reminder of the consequences of such blind national allegiance," said Alia, one of the distributors.

Anti-Recruitment Demonstrations Mark Third Anniversary of the Invasion of Iraq
counterrecruitment1.jpgOn Monday morning, March 20, at around 11:00am, 10 protesters gathered outside the Northeastern University Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) office on Huntington Avenue to protest the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. "We wanted to make sure nobody forgets that both Iraqi civilians and American soldiers are dying everyday," said one protester. The protesters used colorful chalk to transform the sidewalk into a collage of messages such as "100,000 Dead for what?", "Military recruiters out of our schools," "Death zone," and "Recruiting the poor to die for the rich." Protesters also drew chalk body outlines to represent the dead, both Iraqi and American.

Out of School and Into the Military
image001.jpg“All my life I’ve liked the military,” said Adrian Paez, a Colombian immigrant and a senior at East Boston High School. At 17 years old, Adrian has not doubts about joining the US armed forces. “When I think of the army, I don’t think about dying,” he said, “I think of everything I can do, everything I can learn, everything I can be.”

Adrian fled Colombia with his family to escape rural violence and economic adversity in an increasingly militarized society. A year after arriving to the United States, he became a member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Core (JROTC) at East Boston High where he has been learning the basics of military training for the past three years. His real name is not being used in this story to protect him from getting deported.
