Thousands March in Boston for Immigrant Rights |
|
by Sofia Jarrin-Thomas, sofiajt (nospam) yahoo.com |
Boston, MA--Although march organizers expected numbers only in the hundreds, an estimated four to six thousand people came to the Boston Commons to rally in favor of immigrant rights. Inspired by huge crowds of people that rallied this past weekend in Los Angeles (estimated at 500 thousand to 1 million people) Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Milwaukee, and other cities across the United States, Bostonian immigrants came out in mass to take a stand against legislation like Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s (R-WI) bill HR 4437. |

|
by Operation: Over Media Team, operationover (nospam) hush.com |
Roughly 30 concerned citizens chanted slogans and wielded signs and banners in front of BU President Robert Brown’s house late Monday night, for the second time in one week, to protest BU’s proposed Biolab in the Roxbury / South End area which could break ground as early as this month. Activism against the Biolab, which will likely be performing illegal research on deadly pathogens such as tularemia and Ebola, has been on the rise since it recently gained Federal approval to be built against the community’s wishes. |

At a Snail’s Pace: Building a Different Kind of Politics |
|
by Sofia Jarrin, sofiajt (nospam) yahoo.com |
On January 24, the Snail’s Pace Collective visited Boston as part of their East Coast US tour, which includes at least fifteen cities in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee; to facilitate a workshop on the Zapatista movement.
The Snail’s Pace Collective is a small group of student activists brought together as a result of their experiences in Chiapas, Mexico. They all participated in a study abroad program offered by the Mexico Solidarity Network, which is a 14-week, inter-disciplinary program focusing on the context, strategy, and tactics of Mexican social movements. As part of the program, the students attended an indigenous university for one month and participated in a Spanish language program in Zapatista territory for the reminder period of time. The life-changing experience in Chiapas is what prompted these students to share lessons learned with their immediate and larger communities. |

Inequality in America: version 2.0 |
|
by Chuck Collins and Felice Yeskel, |
Fall is inequality season. Every autumn, as the leaves change color, we get a vivid new picture of the trends that pull us apart as a country.
This year is no different. But after almost three decades of incrementally widening disparities of wealth and income, it¹s worth noting that we¹ve entered a new version of economic apartheid, American-style. Let’s call it Inequality 2.0.
The United States is now the third most unequal industrialized society after Russia and Mexico. This is not a club we want to be part of. Russia is a recovering kleptocracy, with a post-Soviet oligarchy enriched by looting. And Mexico, despite joining the rich-nations club of the Organization for Economic and Community Development, has some of the most glaring poverty in the hemisphere. |

Retirees and union members blow the whistle on GE’s low pension and health care benefits |
|
by Rand Wilson, rand (nospam) mindspring.com |
Lynn, MA -- General Electric retirees led a rally in front of the Riverworks plant on Sept. 29 calling attention to the company’s skimpy pension benefits that have not kept up with the rising cost of living -- especially skyrocketing health costs. The retirees were joined by current GE employees, Local 201 and other union leaders, and several community supporters. At the rally, retirees used a cell phone to call GE CEO Jeffrey R. Immelt at the company’s corporate headquarters in Fairfield, CT. Unable to reach him, they sent a message by blowing whistles and playing a new protest song, “The Plight of the GE Pensioneer.” |
