The creep in the global cellar
globe.jpgStill reeling from the election, a crowd of radical artists recently discussed the debacles in Ohio and Florida in a panel mistakenly called “What’s Next?” Lamentations over the demise of John Kerry clog the newswires of grassroots Indymedia outlets around the world. The world itself, from the Global South to the Social Democratic North, reacts with surprise and fear to the news of the President’s second term in office. But is Bush the real problem? Is he the root of all evil? Does anyone remember a little term called Globalization?

Anti-Corporate Victory in Lee; Water Privatization Defeated!
mga_banner.jpgWater and anti-privatization activists recently stopped a bid from the European Multi-National Veolia Environment (working with former local Democratic Party State Rep.) to privatize the water system.

The issue of water privatization in Lee actually arrived through the backdoor. Originally the discussion on the table was about the need in Lee for an upgrade of the town’s sewer system. But pushed by former Democratic Party State Rep. Christopher Hogkins, the town moved towards a proposal that included the design, build, and operation (DBO) of a new Water Plant.

With relatively no public discussion about the ramifications associated with privatizing out the services to a multi-national corporation, and with almost absurd levels of conflict of interests (or at the very least revolving door politics), the town received only one bid, from Veloia Water. Quite a coincidence since Christopher Hogkins the former State Rep from Lee is now a Vice-President and General Manager for the company. (The parent company of this entity is Veolia Environment based in Paris, France.)

100+ Person Rally at Seaboard Corp. Office: Return the Land Now!
laloma.jpg"Here we are with Harry Bresky’s office behind us, and we’re here to say, ‘Give it back, Harry.’ The Ava Guarani and Kolla communities have made an urgent appeal for international solidarity. We have heard the appeal, and today we act upon it." This is one of many lines in an educational skit delivered today on the steps of the office of the Seaboard Corporation’s President and CEO, Harry Bresky, in Brookline, MA. Over one hundred activists gathered to express their disgust about Seaboard Corp’s complicity in the displacement of the Ava Guarani and Kolla communities from Salta, Argentina and allowing brutal repression of those re-occupying their native land.

New Hampshire's Exploited Foreign Student Workers
NHwhip.gif
Last year I had the pleasure of talking with many of the foreign student workers imported into the Lakes Region for the Summer. These students come from overseas, brought in by their employer/sponsors, to work during the Summer, helping local businesses meet the needs of the vacationers flocking to the region for this brief period upon which many of New Hampshire's small business's depend. This year is no different and many of these students, each of whom has paid around one thousand dollars for transportation to our neck of the woods, are back again, hoping to earn enough money to get them through the school year back home. What most locals do not understand is how terribly exploited, underpaid and under-respected many of these student are. They can be found working in the local fast food outlets, super markets, gas stations and hotels. A few of these businesses treats these workers very well, but the vast majority exploit their eagerness to work and the difference in pay between their homelands and New Hampshire. The result of this exploitation is overwork, underpay and frustration.

Indigenous Rights Activists Banned by Newton Court
CourthousewithSignSmall.JPGActivists Vow to Find Other Means to Reveal Abuses of Chestnut Hill based Seaboard
Corporation

In an early morning court hearing in Newton District Court on Thursday, April 18th,
Judge Dyanne J. Klein banned international activists Cha-Cha Connors and Kevin Ksen
from future demonstrations against Chestnut Hill based Seaboard Corporation’s Board
of Directors. The one-year stay-away order marks an escalation of the Boston area
campaign in support of the Ava Guarani and Kolla indigenous communities in Northern
Argentina. In recent months, these indigenous communities have been violently
removed from their ancestral land, physically threatened and harassed by Seaboard
employees.

International Solidarity Activists Successfully Talk to Seaboard President Despite Two Arrests
breskylisten.jpgInternational activists successfully penetrated SEABOARD Corporation annual shareholder’s meeting outside of Boston yesterday (Monday, April 26). SEABOARD, responsible for the eviction of at least two indigenous Guarani communities in Salta, Argentina, was confronted with photographs and the powerful stories of the Kolla and the Ava Guarani. Armed only with cameras and their voices, the activists were able to redirect the shareholders meeting to the issue of indigenous land rights in Salta, Argentina.

Seaboard Corp Publicly Revealed in Boston Area for Indigenous Rights Abuse in Argentina
walkingaway.jpgActivists from Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts brought the voices of the Ava Guarani to the front steps and office doors of the Seaboard Corporation this afternoon. This action was part of an international coalition, Alerta Salta (www.Alerta-Salta.org.ar), which has formed to support the indigenous community in Salta, Argentina. This Ava Guarani community has been displaced and severely repressed at the command of the San Martin del Tabacal sugar refinery, which is owned by the US-based Seaboard Corporation.

Picket in Front of Parsons Corporation as Part of International Day of Action Against War Profiteering in Iraq
DCP_0001.JPGOn Tuesday, February 24, 2004, from noon to 1:00, about twenty-five of us picketed at Parsons Corporation’s offices at 100 Summers Street in Boston’s Financial District. This was part of a international day of action against war profiteering in Iraq, Parsons being targeted because of the contract it was awarded by the Army Corps of Engineers to help rebuild Iraq’s infrastructure. The focus of the protest, organized by United for Justice with Peace (UJP), Massachusetts Peace Action and other groups, was the corrupt manner in which contracts had been given out by the Bush administration, primarily to those corporations with close ties to members of the administration. Much of the reconstruction work has been done in an incompetent manner, without the in-put of the Iraqis most affected by this process--and, to top it all off, it is being paid for with revenue from Iraq’s oil sales. The critique of those protesters I talked to was far wider than just corrupt contracting though--as one might imagine, they were critical of the Bush administration’s war-mongering, but also its neoliberalism (“free” trade policies) and the lack of democratic accountability on the part of the government and corporations, both in Iraq and in the US itself. People in the peace movement are definitely making an effort to tie the issue of ending the US occupation of Iraq to a larger attempt to change our social system.
