Immigrants Rights at the U.S. Social Forum
ussf_carpa2.jpgAtlanta, GA - Friday, 6/29/97.- The U.S. Social Forum is in progress with workshops, presentations and plennaries that cover almost all areas of struggle in this attempt to build "another world." The small Boston May Day Coalition has been present in as many migrant workers workshops as humanly possible. The concept of "migrant worker" is not popular in the forum. Most of the events are labeled "immigrant rights".

JP Forum: Keeping JP Business Independent
Local_businesses.gifJamaica Plain is one of Boston’s most dynamic neighborhoods, thanks in part to the unique variety of independent businesses. Yet main streets in other communities are losing their uniqueness to national chains and mega-retailers. What can JP do to preserve our strong locally-owned business community?

The Jamaica Plain Forum, JP's new community-based lecture series, presents Stacy Mitchell, author of "Big Box Swindle: The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the Fight of America's Independent Businesses". Thursday, June 28th at 7:00pm. Free

Immigrants March to Stop the Raids, Full Legalization Now
IMG_0101.JPGBoston, Mass--It was 4:30 a.m. when they came banging on her door, waking her and everyone else in the house. She went to see what was going on. “Get down!” called out one of her housemates in a loud whisper, “La migra! Get on the floor!” She could barely see the men face down on the carpet but saw the shadows on the window and a bright flashlight that began scanning inside her living room. She ran back to her 4-year-old and locked herself up in the bedroom. She grabbed her child who immediately started whimpering sensing his mother’s panic. “Don’t cry, don’t make a sound. There are policemen outside who want to take us, take me away. We can’t let them hear us. Don’t say a word.” The child understood. Immigration officers had been raiding homes for days in his neighborhood, going after someone with an expired visa and arresting everyone within it without proper documentation. Mothers talked about it in corner stores, in laundry mats, at the playground.

Sembrando Esperanza [Sowing Hope]

That is the posture of the Movement of Rural Workers Without Land (MST) in Brasil. Briefing Note for North American Migrants Rights Activists on Recent African Migration Experiences, European Union Repression, and European-African Activist Responses
african_immigrants.jpgThere is a striking similarity between North America and Europe experiences in the recent upsurge in unauthorized migration from the South, the militarization of borders, anti-immigrant legislation, criminalization of undocumented migrants, government raids, and expulsions. This note is meant to inform the North American migrants’ rights movement of recent events in Europe and Africa as part of a wider effort to promote international unity in the struggle for migrants’ rights.

Testimony of a Detained Oaxaqueño
294599271_8192df9e41.jpgTestimony of a detained Oaxaqueño
November 9th, 2006
Planton de Santo Domingo, Ciudad de Oaxaca

Can you tell me about your detention?

On November 2nd, the PFP (Federal Police) carried out an operative to do away with the barricade Cinco Señores, protecting the University. That day, I was running an errand for my father. The disturbances were visible from afar. When I finished the errand, I came closer to the barricade to see what was happening. Suddenly, then, the PFP came and, without a word, without an arrest warrant, and without witnesses, they detained me very violently.

[BIMC Editors Note: In spite of the music and interference that could be tuned until 6:00 pm on 1400 AM, Radio Universidad was handed over from 4:00 pm on to the vice-president of Universidad Autonoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca, after negotiations. Until 6:45 pm, there were no news about detentions except that it was reported that the radio security and the “people who had occupied the radio in behalf of APPO” were under custody of the president of the UABJO--Chiapas Indymedia. A megamarcha has been called for Dec. 1st]

Talk by WTO Director Disrupted: Activists and Audience Members Forcibly Dragged Out
DSC_0038.jpgOn Wednesday, November 1, the JFK Forum at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government hosted Pascal Lamy, Director General of the World Trade Organization. The subject of the lecture was posed as a question: "Is the WTO Accountable?"

Shortly after the address began, three Boston activists took turns standing up and loudly disrupting the event. Each wore a bright red headband inscribed with the words, “NO WTO.” They read, in part, statements charging the WTO with putting profits before people and destroying the lives, ecosystems, and communities of people around the world. All three were quickly and forcibly dragged from the building, while still delivering their indictments, by Harvard security and Cambridge police.
