Confronting Empire Speaker Series--Harvard Law School March 17-19 |

To mark the 5th anniversary of the U.S. invasion into Iraq, Harvard Law students from the group Unbound, HLS Peace, Justice for Palestine, and the National Lawyers' Guild sponsored a three-day lecture series called Confronting Empire: Five Years of War with Iraq. The third day, March 19, fell on the actual anniversary date, and the lecture this day was called "US Foreign Policy and Intervention in the Middle East." It featured Irene Gendzier, Boston University Professor and Author of "Notes from the Minefield: United States Intervention in Lebanon and the Middle East," and Howard Zinn, historian and author of "A People's History of the United States."

Central American Solidarity Activists Dispute Department of Justice Order, Denounce Possible Repeat of Illegal Harassment |

 Grassroots Group Accused of Being Foreign “Agent” of Leftist Political Party in Lead-up to Contentious Salvadoran Presidential Elections.
The Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES), illegally targeted in the 1980’s by the largest FBI Internal Security investigation of the Reagan era, has in recent months again received threatening communications from the U.S. Department of Justice. Citing the Foreign Agents Registration Act of 1938, a letter sent to CISPES in January questions the organization’s relationship with the leftist Salvadoran political party known as the Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation, or FMLN. CISPES received similar inquiries in the 1980s which eventually led to an illegal FBI investigation into its activities. |

Boston in Solidarity with the Victims of State Repression in Colombia |

 Boston, Mass. -- Last Thursday, on March 6, the Boston May Day Coalition, MLK Bolivarian Circle, Permanent Committee for Peace in Colombia, and Chelsea United Against the War, joined in location at Park Street a vigil called by Colombia Vive. With respect for the activity called by Colombia Vive, these groups expressed their own position about the tragic and dramatic situation in Colombia. This coalition, however, demonstrated in solidarity with the initial call made in Colombia to denounce the crimes of the State and the paramilitary and demand that repression be stopped now. |

Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan |

 From March 13-16th, U.S. veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan will testify to what is really happening day in and day out, on the ground in these occupations. The four-day event will bring together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence. In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.

In the United States, there has developed an enthusiastic movement of support for the Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama. Besides the large forces he appeals to, especially among young adults, he is overwhelmingly supported by the left: liberals, social democrats, and Stalinists. I appreciate the movement-like aspect of his popular support, yet I personally will not vote for him. |

 The "water wars" are on the horizon. Just like oil today. We suffer a moral predicament as big corporations reap windfall profits from privatizing water while billions go thirsty. But who owns our water in the first place? How can we protect this common resource for all, now and forever? There is no one better to address this issue and provide us with hopeful direction than world renowned global expert on water rights, Maude Barlow. Maude discussed how protecting our water sources from corporate interests is as crucial as curbing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, she laid out the actions that we as global citizens must take to secure a water-just world - a "blue covenant" for all.

What’s Wrong with the 2010 Olympics? |

 The Secwepemc have never ceded their lands to Canada or to anyone else. They have consistently affirmed their right to live as they always have, by hunting and fishing to sustain their communities. Development has slowly been eroding this way of life. Despite their recognized right to their ancestral lands, Canadian courts have sided with the province and developers in destroying their habitat as well as the habitats of many wild animals. The concerns of the First Nation peoples are not new. Naomi Klein wrote a 2003 piece for the Guardwarian entitled, “The Olympics Land Grab,” in which she described the repressive measures used by the Canadian government to enforce its presumed right to overrun native lands.

Organizing Lessons from Civil Rights Leader Ella Baker |

 Ella Baker, who was born in North Carolina in 1905, was politicized and radicalized by the poverty of the Great Depression. She participated in self-help programs throughout the 30s and developed an understanding and respect for the process by which people take control over their own lives while also protesting injustices.
