Protesters Call for Closing Guantanamo Bay Detention Center |
|
by Jake Carman, BAAM Newsletter, |
On January 18th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, around 30 people gathered in the freezing cold on the Boston Common to demand that President Obama follow through on his promise to close down Guantanamo Bay Prison. The President had vowed to close Guantanamo Bay—located on a US Naval Base in Cuba where hundreds of accused "terrorists" are detained, many without charges or access to lawyers—within his first year, which ended on January 20th. The President, along with human rights organizations, have condemned Guantanamo for the use of torture and countless other violations of international human rights agreements. |

Aid to Haiti Hopelessly Inadequate, Poorly Organized |
|
by Boston Indymedia, |
US aid to Haiti has been a tiny fraction of what is needed. With hundreds of thousands injured, and more without food and water, President Obama's feeble efforts have been aimed mostly at rescuing tourists and diplomats, with little consideration given to the people of Haiti. In addition, what assistance has arrived is being mired in bureaucratic red tape and military intransigence.

Mutual Aid Disaster Relief for Haiti Needs Assistance |
|
by Mutual Aid Disaster Relief for Haiti, |
|

This group has the benefit of not being attached to a larger organization or government bureaucracy, which means they can mobilize in communities not currently being reached by relief efforts. Many of these same people were involved in the effective, community-based medical response to Hurricane Katrina, including the Common Ground Clinic. |

Lebanon: Rebellious rhymes against post-war misery |
|
by a-films, |
The hip-hop beats ringing through the muddy, unlit streets of the burnt-out Palestinian refugee camp Nahr al-Bared seem incongruous. But the rhymes are camp-grown - and courageous. |
