Controversial Senate elections planned in Haiti |
|
by Kevin Pina/Haiti Information Project, editorial (nospam) haitiinformation.net |
The apparent decision to green light the contentious ballot by Obama comes on the heels of a ruling by Haiti's Provisional Election Council or CEP to exclude the Fanmi Lavalas party of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide on procedural grounds. |

What Obama's Trip to Europe Revealed |
|
by Workers Action, |
Declaring something a success doesn’t necessarily make it so. We learned this at the Bush-led G-20 summit only four months ago, when global leaders were expected to do something far-reaching in response to the world-wide economic crisis, instead of chatting about it. When nothing came of the meeting, we were told that the summit “succeeded” because it “laid the groundwork” for the next G-20 gathering, recently led by Obama.
The four months between G-20 summits was one of rising massive unemployment and social misery for millions of people, creating an urgency that was unmet by the world leaders in London.

NorthEast Anarchist Network: "Direct Action = Solidarity. Confront the Bankers in April!" |
|
by Northeast Anarchist Network, |
|
The NorthEast Anarchist Network is endorsing the "Self Described Anarchist Collective" and Global Justice Action calls for a diversity of tactics, including direct action, to disrupt the Spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Washington, DC. Even in this era of uncontrolled economic retraction and collapse, the IMF and World Bank continue to reach for their misleading, self-proclaimed objective of "eradicating poverty", while paradoxically ignoring the needs of poor and indigenous communities. |

The revolution delayed: 10 years of Hugo Chávez’s rule |
|
by El Libertario, Venezuela, ellibertario (nospam) nodo50.org |
This month (February 2009) marks the tenth anniversary of Hugo Chávez’s coming to power in Venezuela, and ten years of the “Bolivarian revolution”. This process has included waves of state intervention in the economy and fervent rhetoric against US imperialism. But while some on the left see this Chavista movement as the new “socialism for the 21st century”, a more radical critique has argued that it is actually more like an old-fashioned attempt at modernisation by a technocratic élite (including an ex-situationist as second-in-command of the ministry of information and propaganda); that increased bureaucratic power over capital is not inherently progressive; and that the “revolution” in Venezuela allows for very little working-class control or initiative from below.
* A translation of a March 2008 interview conducted by the French anarchist Charles Reeve with two members of the El Libertario group www.nodo50.org/ellibertario in Caracas, the nation’s capital, which offers some stark insights into the reality of the situation. |

|
by SHAC, info (nospam) shac.net |
Now for the seventh time in ten years Huntingdon Life Sciences have been infiltrated and exposed again. Shocking cruelty and footage of experiments have been filmed inside HLS during 2007 and 2008; and primates caputred in the wild were shipped over by plane to France and then road to HLS, enduring 30 hour journeys in small cages from Vietnam.
Animal Defenders International have exposed the primate trade across three continents, including an undercover worker inside a primate unit at HLS during 2007 and 2008. |

Philippines: Don’t revive the “Monster of Morong, Bataan” |
|
by Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC), |
Monday, 02 February 2009 MANILA, Philippines—For making the public choose between paying more for power generation that they do not need to begin with, and tolerating misplaced priorities where debt service supersedes social welfare, the Freedom from Debt Coalition today urged Congress to stop the planned rehabilitation, re-commission and commercial operation of the controversial Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. |
