NYC - Police Raid on IndyMedia Fundraising Event |
by NYC IndyMedia - Video Collective, John Tarleton, |
A multi-agency task force shut down a NYC Indymedia video team benefit late Saturday night, sparking complaints that the action was politically motivated. "I don't think every single department showing up here was a coincidence," said Brandon Jourdan, a video team organizer. "But maybe it was or maybe it was not. People will have to decide for themselves." || NYC IMC Video Team |

Cyprus Govt. Admits CIA Campaign Against Indymedia |
by Cyprus Indymedia, |
The scandal is unfolding in gigantic proportions... and we can hardly keep up with the developments. Responding to a publicity and solidarity campaign by Indymedia, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus has been forced to admit that they were acting under orders from the US Government to carry out an intelligence investigation of Cyprus Indymedia and of one of its founding members, Petros Evdokas, in order to assess whether he "constitutes a threat to US interests." Police had interrogated the family of Petros Evdokas a few weeks ago and, during the affair, inadvertently blurted out that the source of this investigation was a directive by the CIA. After a series of denials and cover-ups (chronicled below) the Police Headquarters issued an official statement on Friday admitting to everything that Indymedia had accused them of, namely that directives of the CIA and the US Embassy have priority over their own mission which, believe it or not, is to protect the tiny and independent Republic from foreign intervention. This campaigns to intimidate IndyMedia is part of a global trend, including the nation- wide "pre- emptive" raids and interrogations by the FBI of radicals in Boston and across the US in order to thwart preparations to protest at the two Republocrat party conventions. |

The Media and Emotions: A Critique of Mainstream Media Coverage of the Anti-DNC Protests |
by Eric Ginsburg, drummer2320 (nospam) comcast.net |
Every night last week I would come home and watch my comrades (and sometimes myself) march through the streets of Boston, rally across the city, or hold a bazaar on Boston Common. Even when the media did use one of the many interviews they filmed, I still wasn’t satisfied. When protesters were shown, they were not portrayed as intelligent, but rather as insane for wanting to protest the Democrats. Violence seems to be the only story most reporters are looking for. Besides the standpoint that protesters are crazy, there is an inability to capture the emotions of the people. The vigor with which the makeshift drums are beaten is not apparent to the television viewer. The gigantic sense of unity with complete strangers is not done justice on the airwaves. You cannot tell how serious and desperate we are from a video of us chanting. More importantly, none of the reasons we do any of these things is examined, but rather the editing and censoring discredit the fact that we do them. |

Art Exhibit Opening Minds In Copley Square |
by Pete Stidman, petestid (nospam) yahoo.com |
Visitors to the posh shopping area of Back Bay are finding themselves attracted to a powerful art exhibit put on by the American Friends Service Committee, a National Quaker Peace and Justice Aid Organization. The idea for the exhibit came from the groups Chicago office. A visitor to the site is confronted with a formation of 907 boots, a number that rises almost daily. It is the number of American Soldiers killed in Iraq. There is another pile of shoes that represents the 16,000 Iraqi’s estimated killed. |

Look Out CNN! Anarchists are Gonna Get Your Mama!--How the Media Demonizes Radical Dissent |
by Scott Mylxine, mylxine (nospam) hotmail.com |

As the political conventions come closer, Boston and New York's law enforcement brace for protests. In their battle to protect the citizenry from itself, police and FBI (with the help of a lap dog media) are using an age-old tactic: Demonize the Anarchists! I was listening to CNN Radio in my home this morning when a broadcaster started a new story on yet a new "elevated terror threat.” This time, the "threat" was centered around an "unconfirmed" report that a domestic group had plans to attack the media at the upcoming Democratic National Convention. Who was this menacing group? The anarchists. This is nothing new. The anarchists have never had a fair shake as far as the media is concerned. |

Reportback: New England Regional Indymedia Gathering |
by Pete Stidman, petestid (nospam) yahoo.com |
GREAT BARRINGTON, MA- Deep in the Berkshire Mountains, out at the end of a dirt track, a strange call boomed. It was unlike any bird, frog or mammal ever heard. It was the call of the once rare, and now swiftly becoming plentiful, indymedia devotee. Odd the call was, something like a thunderous cross between a red tail and a member of the Mohawk tribe from way back (with just a twinge of the Boston brogue) and a steady beat. It sounded so distinct and so much more advanced than anything like an elephant or a donkey that one could forget that these animals ever existed, if it weren’t for the gathering’s focus on the upcoming Democratic and Republican National Conventions. |
