Jewish Voice for Peace Joins 90 Other Cities to Demand Human Rights for Palestine |

 Israel has been controlling the entrances and exits to Gaza for the past months, preventing the population from receiving the humanitarian aid they so desperately need and creating a disastrous human crisis.
On Saturday, December 2nd, the International Day of Action to Stop the Siege of Gaza, Jewish Voice for Peace/Boston held a demonstration in Harvard Square, one of many JVP-initiated demonstrations in the U.S. in which members and supporters stood in solidarity with peace and justice groups in Israel, Palestine, and in more than 90 cities around the world who want to see this terrible disaster end and to ask for what should be a given: the respect of every human’s rights. |

The Boston Globe Must Cover the Crisis at CPCS |

 The most diverse college within the most diverse university in the Northeast, the UMass Boston College of Public and Community Service (CPCS), is in serious risk of destruction at the hands of its own Dean (supported by the UMass Boston Provost and Chancellor). For months, the CPCS community has tried to get serious coverage of this crisis in the Boston Globe, and has been repeatedly rebuffed. Now the CPCS community is demanding coverage, through this petition, after providing statistics demonstrating that the Boston Globe has an established pattern of seriously underreporting events at UMass Boston--a large public college--when compared to its generous coverage of large private colleges in the Boston area. |

 Oak Bluffs, Mass - The isle of Martha’s Vineyard provides intriguing theater in mid and late august, particularly for black folk of means. There’s a “history”, and culture and cash often collide. This year cinema entered the equation on the evening of August 23rd when filmmaker Spike Lee, a summer resident of the island, rolled on and rolled out, his version of the events around August 29, 2005 when a hurricane named Katrina slammed into the gulf regions of Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi. On August 30th, the levees designed to protect “n’Orleans” broke, sending torrents of water and death into the city’s primarily Black and poor 9th Ward. “On the Vineyard…high cotton”, Mr. Lee said. “Lobster and stuff…Chardonnay. Think about ‘em over in the muck of New Orleans.” |

Poverty in Boston, What Poverty? |

 That’s exactly what an editor for the business section at the Boston Globe said during class at Harvard when I proposed writing a story about the correlation between the rise in crime and poverty in our city. I was dumbfounded and almost answered, “All you have to do is look outside your window,” as I remembered the men standing day after day on the street corners looking for work at my Somerville neighborhood. Then again, I didn’t know where the editor lived and the suburbs isn’t exactly a Boston hub for the homeless. The story idea was shut down, and we both moved on with our privileged lives. |
