A Tale of Two Marches
walkforhunger.jpgBoston, Mass.--One of the obvious reasons for the historical success of the Walk for Hunger (and biggest differences between it and the May Day event) is its wholly non-ideological nature. But hunger doesn’t occur in a vacuum, ideological or otherwise. It isn’t natural, and it isn’t desirable, but there it is, and it’s growing. Hunger is rooted at a nexus of political, economic, scientific, technological, and spiritual ideologies, making that one hell of a busy rotary indeed.

[Essay on the May Day march in Boston and & Walk for Hunger on the following Saturday. Full text with images, live links and edited video montage of May Day event appears on nosuppertonight.com.]

El Salvador Solidarity Activists and Community Organizations Dispute Department of Justice Order
BOSTON, MA: Last January the U.S.-based El Salvador solidarity group—the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES)—received a letter from the U.S. Department of Justice, citing the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) of 1938 and questioning the organization’s relationship with the leftist Salvadoran political party known as the Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation, or FMLN.

The Long March from Cinco de Mayo to Cinco de Pentagon
17PROTEST_MEXICO,0.jpgThose of us old enough to remember might recall those halcyon days when celebrating Cinco de Mayo meant many things: closing off a street in what was then known as a “barrio”, listening to sometimes inspired and sometimes less-than-inspired music of long-sideburned Santana wannabees from the local garage bands and eating food infused with the love of the local. And we sort of listened to the bandana’d radical Chicana organizer urging us to become part of the global liberation struggle commemorated on May 5th, when badly-equipped, but inspired Mexican guerrillas defeated the forces of Napoleon III’s French Empire in the 19th century.

To Snitch or Not To Snitch: The View From The Other Side
snitching.jpgI decided to write this article in response to the endless criticism that is being directed against the “Stop Snitching” movement by critics claiming that Hip Hop is responsible for the “Stop Snitching” movement and the “Us vs. Them” mentality youth of color have towards law enforcement agencies. As a former gang member and street combatant of the drug wars that dominated the streets of Philly in the late 80’s and a member of the generation that came of age listening to Hip Hop I believe I am qualified to offer a frontline perspective from the other side of the issue, especially as one who was sentenced to life without parole as a juvenile because of the testimony of a snitch co-defendant that was close to 10 years older than I.

A Culture of Death And Destruction
Growth_Versus_Sustainability.jpgSome people have likened the Earth to a relatively small lifeboat wheeling in an incredibly vast sea of outer space. If they also think that the sinking of the Titanic was a sad disaster, they will be heartbroken over the tragic devastation when this sort of occurrence happens on a planetary scale.

In the end, the answers almost don't matter because, as Judy Bonds states, "In Southern West Virginia we live in a war zone. Three and one-half million pounds of explosives are being used every day to blow up the mountains. Blasting our communities, blasting our homes, poisoning us, trying to intimidate us. I don't mind being poor. I mind being blasted and poisoned. - There ARE no jobs on a dead planet."
