To Snitch or Not To Snitch: The View From The Other Side
snitching.jpgI decided to write this article in response to the endless criticism that is being directed against the “Stop Snitching” movement by critics claiming that Hip Hop is responsible for the “Stop Snitching” movement and the “Us vs. Them” mentality youth of color have towards law enforcement agencies. As a former gang member and street combatant of the drug wars that dominated the streets of Philly in the late 80’s and a member of the generation that came of age listening to Hip Hop I believe I am qualified to offer a frontline perspective from the other side of the issue, especially as one who was sentenced to life without parole as a juvenile because of the testimony of a snitch co-defendant that was close to 10 years older than I.

A Culture of Death And Destruction
Growth_Versus_Sustainability.jpgSome people have likened the Earth to a relatively small lifeboat wheeling in an incredibly vast sea of outer space. If they also think that the sinking of the Titanic was a sad disaster, they will be heartbroken over the tragic devastation when this sort of occurrence happens on a planetary scale.

In the end, the answers almost don't matter because, as Judy Bonds states, "In Southern West Virginia we live in a war zone. Three and one-half million pounds of explosives are being used every day to blow up the mountains. Blasting our communities, blasting our homes, poisoning us, trying to intimidate us. I don't mind being poor. I mind being blasted and poisoned. - There ARE no jobs on a dead planet."

“4,000 Too Many,” Boston Mourns U.S. Deaths in Iraq
IMG_0026.jpgVigils across the United States yesterday and today marked the 4,001 death of a U.S. soldier in Iraq. Called by several peace groups and military members against the war, people in almost every single state mourned the loss of life in a war that for most Americans has become unjust and meaningless.

“By grieving in public, many families have found comfort,” said Carlos Arredondo, father of Lance Corporal Alexander Scott Arredondo, who died while serving in Najaf at the young age of twenty--the 974th U.S. death of the Bush administration’s war. Indeed, many in Boston attended today’s vigil because it comforts them to stay alert, to show support, to represent the troops in a way that calls for their safe return home.

Good Friday Anti-War Vigils In Boston
Boston -Good Friday Pax Christi Anti-War Stations of the Cross 006.jpgOn Good Friday yesterday, two religious vigils against war were held in downtown Boston. The first was the annual Quaker Witness For Peace, held every Good Friday since 1961, by the Beacon Hill Friends Meeting. About 40 peace activists stood in dignified silence on Boston Common from 11:30am-2pm to stand in solemn witness against war. Leaflets were handed out to passersby explaining the vigil's purpose.

Then, a block away in front of the State House, from 1pm-2pm,the Catholic peace group Pax Christi held a solemn reading of the 15 stations of the cross--each of the 15 stations had an anti-war and social justice theme. Participants held banners expressing religious opposition to war.

Boston Residents Shut Down Tremont Military Recruiting Station
267894848_Hi8Bj-M.jpgBoston, Mass -- This afternoon, a group of Boston-area residents shut down the Tremont Street Military Recruiting Station for one hour before being arrested by Boston Police. At 3:15 PM, five Boston-area residents re-enacted the scene of a massacre on the sidewalk in front of the Tremont Street Military Recruiting Station, across from Boston Common. Dressed as slain Iraqi civilians, an Iraqi mourner, a slain U.S. soldier and a U.S. mourner, the protesters laid in silence as red dye stained their clothing.

IVAW Winter Soldier Local Support Action
3-15-08 Winter Soldier--005.jpgOn March 13-16 in Washington, DC, the Iraq Veterans Against The War conducted the "Winter Soldier" hearings on the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war. Former US military who were in Iraq and Afghanistan testified about US war crimes in the 2 wars and dramatically condemned the Bush administration and Pentagon for starting the wars.

The DC hearings were broadcast live on the internet and they were seen by the public at many locations organized by anti-war activists in multiple states. In Boston, viewings were organized at the University of Massachusetts on Friday and the First Parish Church in Harvard Square, Cambridge on this past Saturday 3-15. A good turnout showed up in Cambridge Saturday to watch the IVAW Winter Soldier hearings. Local media, including the Boston Globe, covered the event; however the IVAW Winter Soldier was largely ignored by most corporate media. People took anti-war signs and a bullhorn outside to Harvard Square to make the public aware of the Winter Soldier proceedings.
