DNC Protest, Split, and the Principled Stand of Cynthia McKinney
123 r68-logo.jpg"As the United States activated Navy ships and the Air Force to begin an airlift of non-specified goods into the former Soviet state of Georgia, and military exercises began in the Persian Gulf near Iran, I received communications from certain individuals among the Colorado Greens who were organizing campaign support events there, suggesting that I not participate in an anti-war program being organized by other individuals in Colorado." -Cynthia McKinney

In addition, the Green Party of Colorado has issued false statements to the press and all over the internet claiming that Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney will not be participating in the Recreate ’68 events. Here is one such statement from Dave Chandler, co-chair of the Colorado Green Party, Green Party candidate for U.S. Congress in the Seventh Congressional District, and supporter of a Denver ballot measure that would seize the vehicles of illegal immigrants:

“Cynthia McKinney, Green Party candidate for President, and Rosa Clemente, Green Party candidate for Vice President are NOT participating in any Recreate ‘68 activities. Both candidates, and the Green Party of Colorado, are refuting this announcement and are stating that neither candidate, nor the Green Party of Colorado, are in any way associated with Recreate ’68, nor will any of their candidates be speaking at or attending any event, nor are they in any way associated with the group Recreate ’68.”

This is a blatant lie. Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente will be speaking at the Recreate ’68 events.

Counter Military Recruitment Action in Boston
New_Boston Counter- military recruitment action Aug. 2 2008 024.jpgAbout 200 anti-war activists picketed in front of the Boston armed forces recruitment center on Tremont Street. Protesters had a picket line directly in front of the center on the sidewalk. Across the street info tables were set up from Troops Out Now, Veterans For Peace, IrawqVeterans Against the War, and other peace groups. There was a small pro-war counter demonstration there with no incidents.

The picketers shouted spirited chants against the wars and the recruiting center. This action was part of a series of local actions across the country to stop a war against Iran. For more photos go to:

Obama Lays Out Plans for Continued War
123 7934e2a8-d224-4b72-9d51-a12df659f832.jpgIn a July 14, 2008 New York Times Op Ed, Barack Obama says:

"As I’ve said many times, we must be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in. We can safely redeploy our combat brigades at a pace that would remove them in 16 months. That would be the summer of 2010 — two years from now, and more than seven years after the war began. After this redeployment, a residual force in Iraq would perform limited missions: going after any remnants of Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, protecting American service members and, so long as the Iraqis make political progress, training Iraqi security forces."

In other words, he does not plan to get all of the troops out of Iraq and he will only get most of the troops out in two years. And what does he explain he will do with these troops? Redeploy them. Redeployed where? His rhetoric has been clear: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran.

Corey Glass' Deportation Halted; Canadian Court Rules on Asylum Case
soldier_sm.jpgThe day before he was scheduled for deportation, Corey Glass, a former sergeant with the National Guard, was granted a review of his case. Meanwhile, the pressure in Canada mounted to allow US war resisters seeking refuge to stay in that country, when Canada’s Federal Court ruled that the Immigration and Refugee Board should reconsider the asylum case of Joshua Key. The ruling was based on the right of soldiers to refuse improper orders that would violate the Geneva Conventions. A third war resister, Robin Long, was arrested that same day and is facing deportation Monday for failing to notify immigration officials of an address change.

LISTEN TO AUDIO: Interview with Adam from Courage to Resist, an organization set up to support soldiers who refuse to fight in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Iraq War Resisters Seek Refuge in Canada: First Deportee Scheduled for July 10
corey_sm.jpg
Corey Glass is a former sergeant from the Los Angeles California National Guard, who arrived in Canada in August 2006. "When I joined the national guard, they told me the only way I would be in combat is if there were troops occupying the United States," Corey said. "I signed up to defend people and do humanitarian work filling sandbags if there was a hurricane; I should have been in New Orleans, not Iraq." Now he faces deportation.

Anatomy of a Successful Antiwar Movement
anti-war.jpgThis summer there will be a National Assembly to End the Iraq War and Occupation in Cleveland, Ohio (http://natassembly.org). One of the main goals of the assembly will be to lay the groundwork for mass action against the war. At first glance, 2008 seems like an unlikely year to jump start a sluggish antiwar movement. With the elections this fall, the political pressure to line up behind the Democratic Party’s slate of candidates is already peeling away our fair weather friends from those of us who are serious about building an independent antiwar movement.
