(A-Radio) Feminism and conflict resolution: the Anarchist Federation Britain and its Safer Spaces policy
As Anarchist Radio Berlin we had the opportunity of talking to a comrade of the Anarchist Federation in Britain about their Safer Spaces policy. In this interview she tells us about the origins of this concept, the misconceptions and popular defensive strategies and also about the actual practice and constant development of this policy that deals with conflict resolution in political structures and survivor-lead processes in case of physical abuse.

Flood the System Report Back: Still Lots of Work To Do
In May of 2015, Rising Tide North America issued a bold and ambitious invitation to organize a flood of actions “washing over, occupying, blockading, shutting down and flooding the institutions that exploit us and threaten our survival” throughout fall of 2015. The invitation recognized a need begin to organize in a way that would allow us to grow and connect social movements at an unprecedented scale and scope in order to respond to the many crises we face and shift power back to our communities. While much of the climate movement was orienting a focus on the COP21 talks in Paris, we argued that governments and corporations would only address the crisis we are facing with negotiations that propose minor changes and sustain capitalism.

Report From Last Night's Ferguson Solidarity March
Gratitude and power for all the actions last night in solidarity with the community
of Ferguson, with Michael Brown's family and all those who face the violence of
systemic racism, police brutality and the killing of black and brown people.

A few moments of light... At yesterday evening's demonstration in Boston, Sub/Urban
Justice youth leaders and community shut down the streets, witnessed at the South
Bay detention center, shared our voices in struggle and tried to figure out what
hope looks like in these days of despair.

EMERGENCY APPEAL: PLEASE MAKE A PHONE CALL IN SUPPORT OF COLIN, FIRED FOR UNION ORGANIZING
Last week IWW member Colin was fired from his job as a baker at Insomnia Cookies in Harvard Square. A trained organizer, Colin was working to unionize the company, which has been dogged by charges of racism, wage theft, failure to provide breaks and retaliation against union activists. Last year Insomnia was forced to pay back wages to four IWW members illegally fired for striking. Colin is the sixth IWW member unfairly fired by the company in less than two years.

BOSTON IWW’S TO GCI: F U!
gci1.jpgReposted from the Boston IWW blog.

Today Wobblies from Boston took to the street to support Portland OR canvassers, employed by Grassroots Campaigns Inc (GCI), who formed the United Campaign Workers* union in response to poverty pay, impossible quotas, meager training, and blatant disrespect. Canvassers’ demands included $15/hr, overtime pay, and sick leave. The company retaliated by shutting down its Portland operation, laying off employees with no notice and just two days’ wages!

Two Pieces on Surveillance
Surveillance // Panopticon // Security Culture // Paranoia

Why hammer out concepts--be it speculative, critical, or pragmatist--if there is a meta-authority overseeing it all? Why conspire in the light?....We need to develop dissident knowledge of how to bring down drones, detect sensors, hack servers, distort GPS signals, and disrupt Google by fooling its algorithms. Forget the next innovation cycle. If the common hacker’s paranoia informs us correctly, we lost the war years ago and are surrounded. Soon we will be called to surrender, one by one.
--Geert Lovink "Hermes on the Hudson: Notes on Media Theory after Snowden. e-flux.com/journal, April 4, 2014.

A culture of security is one which enhances an organization's capacity to determine its interests and act on them in spite of another organization's opposed interests. Corporate workforces and law enforcement agencies both cultivate cultures of security, as do management teams, investment rings, smugglers, unions, militia men, and academic researchers. All of these cultures are supposed to control flows of information (trade secrets, exclusive suppliers, price indexes, strategic plans, etc.) and restrict communication in furtherance of an organization's interests.

Among dissident circles, the term Security Culture has been popularized as a response to the absence of organization and shared organizational interests. Security Culture carries a few hard and fast rules (don't talk to cops, need-to-know basis, interrupt gossip, etc.) which have established a rough outline of best practices when daily life and sensitive operations overlap or are indistinguishable.

Best practices are fundamental to the Insurgent, who frequently operates without clear structures of command and communication, enjoys limited operational awareness, and can hardly imagine an everyday life divorced from sensitive operations. The Insurgent, however, should not be confused with a dissident or “common hacker,” as Lovink puts it, and the conflation of Security Culture with Operations Security carries heavy tolls.
