Roxbury Organizers Continue to Fight Biolab
biolab.jpgDespite the recent ground-breaking of Boston University's BioSafety Level 4 laboratory, Roxbury organizers are still trying to stop its construction. The lab, which would test deadly pathogens such as anthrax and ebola, purportedly using scores of animals in the process, would be located next to the Roxbury neighborhood, putting Roxbury residents at grave risk in the case of a leak.

Palestine Youths Art Censorship: Protest at Brandeis
brandisepalrt 003.jpgAlmost a hundred Brandies students and local activists descended on the Goldfarb library yesterday to reclaim an exhibit of children’s art by Palestinian refugees that had been removed by school officials. Initiated by an Israeli student and former IOF solider the display showed the realities of life under occupation from the eyes of its young victims.

Civil Rights: The Second Wave, Bostonians Call for a Humane Immigration Policy
immigration2.jpgImagine trying to cross the border from Mexico into the United States in the blistering heat of the summer, a trip that many people don’t survive, and running into an enormous wall that stretches as far as you can see in both directions for miles upon miles. Imagine suddenly becoming a felon, not because you committed a felony, but because the government changed the laws. Imagine getting arrested and spending three years in a federal prison for giving food and clothing to an immigrant. Imagine getting deported. Imagine facing even more racial profiling and harassment from police than you already do because 11 million “criminals” are running loose with the same skin color as you. This will be a reality if Congress passes “The Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005,” also known as H.R. 4437. As Malena Mayorga, a community organizer for the local immigrant advocacy group Centro Presente, put it: “We’re not going to sit back and be obedient slaves.”

Jenin Anniversary Palestine Demo Gets Noticed at BU on Monday
DSC00864.JPGSeveral Palestine solidarity activists protested a traveling recruitment fair for the Jewish state on Monday at BUs Marsh chapel. It was the fourth anniversary of the invasion and massacre in the Jenin refugee camp and the open presence of supporters of the apartheid occupation regime in Palestine was particularly offensive.

Balata Camp Solidarity Demo. - Newton
2274.jpgA few of the usual suspects turned out for a small but colorful Palestine vigil at Newton city hall Wednesday night. We gathered in solidarity with the residents of the Balata refuge camp outside of Nablus which has been under siege by attacking Israeli forces for almost a week. Many children and camp residents have been shot, some killed, homes have been demolished and all deprived of food, medical care, and basic freedoms as the occupiers conducts ruthless military aggression against the camps 21,000 inhabitants.

Prospective BU Students Informed of Biolab During Campus Tours
boycott1.jpgSeven Boston University (BU) campus tours were interrupted today by members of Operation: Over to inform the prospective students about BU’s proposed BioSafety Level 4 (BSL-4) lab in Roxbury. These interruptions were intended to promote the boycott of BU that Operation: Over has called.

The boycott is calling for high school students who are considering attending BU to reconsider, on the grounds that their tuition money will go towards funding the proposed BSL-4 lab, which will be built in a densely populated, low-income community of color against its wishes.

Anti-Biolab Protesters Visit BU President Brown’s Home for a Second Time
browndemo2.jpgRoughly 30 concerned citizens chanted slogans and wielded signs and banners in front of BU President Robert Brown’s house late Monday night, for the second time in one week, to protest BU’s proposed Biolab in the Roxbury / South End area which could break ground as early as this month. Activism against the Biolab, which will likely be performing illegal research on deadly pathogens such as tularemia and Ebola, has been on the rise since it recently gained Federal approval to be built against the community’s wishes.
