Lessons from Katrina: One Year Later
DSC09846.jpg“The source of the flood is not the water; it's gentrification,” said Keric Johnson from the Builders Guild at a rally yesterday in Roxbury organized by the Rosa Parks Human Rights Day Committee to remember the ongoing suffering of the people of New Orleans from Katrina and its aftermath. “The land belongs to the people. It isn’t the water that drove us away, it’s the globalization of the economy, it’s the end of the post-industrial cities. We need to build a damn ourselves.”

Poverty in Boston, What Poverty?
new_orleans.jpgThat’s exactly what an editor for the business section at the Boston Globe said during class at Harvard when I proposed writing a story about the correlation between the rise in crime and poverty in our city. I was dumbfounded and almost answered, “All you have to do is look outside your window,” as I remembered the men standing day after day on the street corners looking for work at my Somerville neighborhood. Then again, I didn’t know where the editor lived and the suburbs isn’t exactly a Boston hub for the homeless. The story idea was shut down, and we both moved on with our privileged lives.

Somerville 5 Jury Returns Mixed Verdict
Boston--After deliberating all day, jurors found Somerville Five defendants Calvin Belfon, Jr and Isaiah Anderson 'not guilty' of all felony charges but 'guilty' of several misdemeanors. Their lawyers immediately filed appeals on their behalf. A quiet tension greeted the jurors as they filed into the courtroom at 4:15 in the afternoon. Several of the jurors smiled. But the smiles were deceptive, and soon there were tears in the eyes of friends, family members, and supporters as the indictments and verdicts were read out and repeated back one by one, according to a precise ritual ordained by the Commonwealth.

Roxbury Organizers Continue to Fight Biolab
biolab.jpgDespite the recent ground-breaking of Boston University's BioSafety Level 4 laboratory, Roxbury organizers are still trying to stop its construction. The lab, which would test deadly pathogens such as anthrax and ebola, purportedly using scores of animals in the process, would be located next to the Roxbury neighborhood, putting Roxbury residents at grave risk in the case of a leak.
