The Third Social Forum of the Americas Has Begun in Guatemala
fsa_opening.JPGGuatemala City -- October 7, 2008.- The Social Forum of the Americas has begun, with most of the nearly 2000 participants arriving today. The registration process begun normally while switching from an automated system to a manual one. All the packets and a beautiful bag where distributed to each registered delegate. There was not doubt here that Spanish is the official language of the forum. The other undisputed presence is that of the Mayan people. In fact, their presence has been felt not only in numbers, but also in spiritual influence. Mayan religious ceremonies have gone on at dawn and sundown.

Banks Get Bailed Out, People Get Thrown Out
2008 0925 Esquivel 045.jpgThe Esquivel family were evicted Thursday from their home in Roslindale. That same morning they had gone to the Boston Municipal Court in a last effort to stop the eviction. The judge did not rule in their favor. Raul and Anna Esquivel came back from court, tears streaming for their face, to find about 10 police officers on and around their property and another 40 people protesting the eviction. The picket was lively and emotional. Around forty people came out to support the Esquivels. The blockade was called by City Life/Urbana, and supported by many community groups, including Dorchester People for Peace, SEIU 615, the Boston No Eviction Network, the Boston Workers Alliance and others. At one point it appeared that the eviction was going to be called off. To this news, Anna Esquivel danced and people cheered. Yet about 30 minutes later, there was another call saying the eviction was in fact going to take place that same day at 2:30 pm.

Tenants Tell Deutsche Bank to Stop Putting Around
DeutscheBankProtest026-1.jpgBankers, brokers and other elites came together on Saturday, August 30th for a posh and pompous romp at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. The Deutsche Bank Championship featured world class golfers, thousands of spectators, and is sponsored by multinational Deutsche Bank. As it happens, Deutsche Bank is also the leader in home foreclosures in Massachusetts. Protestors from across Massachusetts and Rhode Island picketed outside the tournament, greeting each shuttle bus with their message to stop the evictions and stop the predatory lending that leads to foreclosure.

Celebrating Black August: From the Streets to Prison Resistance
soledad.jpgA Black Panther member and author of two books, Blood in My Eye and Soledad Brother, George Jackson was killed by prison guards while serving his term in San Quentin prison on August 21, 1971. A year earlier, his brother Jonathan Jackson was killed for taking hostage a courtroom to demand the freedom of his brother and five other San Quentin prisoners. Black August originated from these events to honor the fallen, and it spread into a practice of self-reflection and self-determination in the black resistance movement, particularly within prison.

Following is an interview with Kazi Toure, ex-political prisoner and co-chair of the Jericho Movement about Black August history and the current struggles against the prisoner industrial complex.

DNC Protest, Split, and the Principled Stand of Cynthia McKinney
123 r68-logo.jpg"As the United States activated Navy ships and the Air Force to begin an airlift of non-specified goods into the former Soviet state of Georgia, and military exercises began in the Persian Gulf near Iran, I received communications from certain individuals among the Colorado Greens who were organizing campaign support events there, suggesting that I not participate in an anti-war program being organized by other individuals in Colorado." -Cynthia McKinney

In addition, the Green Party of Colorado has issued false statements to the press and all over the internet claiming that Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney will not be participating in the Recreate ’68 events. Here is one such statement from Dave Chandler, co-chair of the Colorado Green Party, Green Party candidate for U.S. Congress in the Seventh Congressional District, and supporter of a Denver ballot measure that would seize the vehicles of illegal immigrants:

“Cynthia McKinney, Green Party candidate for President, and Rosa Clemente, Green Party candidate for Vice President are NOT participating in any Recreate ‘68 activities. Both candidates, and the Green Party of Colorado, are refuting this announcement and are stating that neither candidate, nor the Green Party of Colorado, are in any way associated with Recreate ’68, nor will any of their candidates be speaking at or attending any event, nor are they in any way associated with the group Recreate ’68.”

This is a blatant lie. Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente will be speaking at the Recreate ’68 events.

Eviction Blockades Defend Working Neighborhoods, Stop Foreclosures
blockade.jpgAmidst the soaring cost of living and a national foreclosure crisis across the country, some residents in Boston are sticking up for their right to housing and to keep properties out of the banks’ hands. On Tuesday July 15, supporters for Roxbury resident Paula Taylor came together to stop the bank from evicting her and repossessing her house, in a technique called an “eviction blockade.” The action was successful and Taylor retained the right to live in her house.
