Boston Delegation to the World Social Forum 2007 in Nairobi Kenya Proposes Intercontinental Unity in the Struggle for Migrant Workers Rights in the World
uhuru4-b.jpgThis activity seeks to demonstrate the need to join forces in the world to confront the injustices of a condition created by contemporary capitalism: large masses of migrant workers desperately seeking work to survive. In that process they are abused, victimized, exploited and discriminated.

The Problem the Boston Globe has with Muslims
waraffiche2 (2).jpgFor several years the news media have reported increasing numbers of controversies involving Muslim communities throughout the USA as well as in Europe. Recently, Representative Goode and US Holocaust Museum Memorial Museum Council member Dennis Prager objected to US Representative Ellison's use of a Quran during the congressional oath-taking ceremony. Since Ellison's election, Goode and many other politicians and pundits have been demanding changes in immigration law to decrease or to stop the immigration of Muslims to the USA as if the Ellison's ancestors have not been residing in the territory of the USA since the eighteenth century. Such proposals constitute an unsubtle statement that Muslims have no place in America. Muslims seem to us somewhat exotic, and are therefore easy to stereotype. Dumping on Muslims is fun, cheap, and easy.

The unwillingness of American and Western societies in general to confront naked Islamophobic incitement recalls so many pathological actions associated with the development of modern anti-Semitism in Central and Eastern Europe that we Americans must ask ourselves whether Islamophobia is the New Anti-Semitism.

Boston Joins Protesters Worldwide: Shut Down Guantanamo, Now!
dsc02947[1] (2).jpgBoston, Mass.-- “I’m a litigator here in Boston and I have been working on representing six men detained in Guantanamo Bay Cuba since January 20, 2002. I had the opportunity to go down to the base. I met with these guys. I looked into their eyes. I have spoken with them and have spoken extensively with their families,” said Jeff Gleason, defense attorney with WilmerHale and the Center for Constitutional Rights. “This is of course the 5th anniversary of the opening of the Guantanamo detention facility. Guantanamo has become a powerful image, both at home and abroad, and has come to represent the very worst in the Bush administration’s approach to the war on terror.”

Memorial Planned for Local Activist Eric Weinberger
winkeric.JPGBoston, Mass--Eric Weinberger, a lifelong activist and organizer in the civil rights, anti–nuclear, and anti–war movements, died on December 15, 2006. Eric was best known in Boston for his work with Food Not Bombs, an organization which provides free food to the hungry year–round in public parks.

Eric will be remembered by many people for many things, but throughout it all he carried himself with dignity and an extreme humbleness. He devoted his entire life to working for justice, easing the hardships of others, and serving as a mentor and inspiration to many younger activists.

Human Rights Organization Denounces Egregious Workplace Immigration Raids in Six Meatpacking Plants
061213_immigration_hmed_7a.hmedium.jpgCAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The New England Regional office of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) expresses deep concern that the immigration sweeps which recently took place in six Swift & Company meatpacking plants in six states represent an egregious attack on the right to work, and whose sole effect serves to stir up unfounded negative sentiments towards migrants and divide working-class families and migrant communities. Furthermore, some press reports indicate that less than 5% of those detained were charged with identity theft raising serious questions about the use of identity theft as a principle motive behind the raids.
