Concerned citizens "die" at BU biolab site
die-in3.jpgA crowd of people gathered outside the site of BU's proposed biolab late Tuesday afternoon and fell down "dead," faces streaked with fake blood. "We wanted to show the public what an outbreak might look like," said Derek Garcia, a Boston-area resident. The street theater, which was staged by anti-biolab protestors, was intended to draw attention to the dangers of placing a Biosafety Level 4 (BSL4) facility in the middle of a densely-populated urban area. Participants included members of the direct action campaign Operation: Over, people from the Coalition to Stop the Bioterrorism Lab, and members of the Green-Rainbow Party.

Thousands March in Boston for Immigrant Rights
wearenotcriminals.jpgBoston, MA--Although march organizers expected numbers only in the hundreds, an estimated four to six thousand people came to the Boston Commons to rally in favor of immigrant rights. Inspired by huge crowds of people that rallied this past weekend in Los Angeles (estimated at 500 thousand to 1 million people) Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Milwaukee, and other cities across the United States, Bostonian immigrants came out in mass to take a stand against legislation like Rep. James Sensenbrenner’s (R-WI) bill HR 4437.

Modified Ribbons Distributed Across Boston in Remembrance of Lives Lost in Iraq
ribbons2.jpgOn Monday, March 20, 8 people rode their bikes all over Boston distributing modified "Support Your Troops" ribbons. Over 200 ribbons had been collected over the last two years. The ribbons were spray-painted black with the message "100,000 Dead" accompanied by a peace sign inscribed in white. "We wanted to show that for some people, life isn’t just 'business as usual': our Iraqi sisters and brothers are being killed everyday. The ribbon is also a popular symbol of comodified patriotism: we wanted to transform that into a somber reminder of the consequences of such blind national allegiance," said Alia, one of the distributors.

Anti-Recruitment Demonstrations Mark Third Anniversary of the Invasion of Iraq
counterrecruitment1.jpgOn Monday morning, March 20, at around 11:00am, 10 protesters gathered outside the Northeastern University Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) office on Huntington Avenue to protest the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. "We wanted to make sure nobody forgets that both Iraqi civilians and American soldiers are dying everyday," said one protester. The protesters used colorful chalk to transform the sidewalk into a collage of messages such as "100,000 Dead for what?", "Military recruiters out of our schools," "Death zone," and "Recruiting the poor to die for the rich." Protesters also drew chalk body outlines to represent the dead, both Iraqi and American.

Archdiocese of Boston Abandons Children in Need of Adoption
st_francis_assisi_compress.jpgFor over 100 years, the Catholic Charities of Boston has provided loving homes for children by finding adoptive parents for them. Because of disputes about gay parents, they have decided to stop providing adoption services at all.

Torture Memo Judge Greeted by Protests at Harvard
bybee protesers.jpgCambridge, MA (9 March 2006) — Federal appellate judge Jay Bybee, who signed the infamous 2002 “torture memo,” was confronted by protesters at Harvard Law School today after speaking at a closed event.

In August 2002, Bybee, then a high-ranking Justice Department official, signed the now-infamous “torture memo” establishing a legal framework for interrogation policies in the “Global War on Terror.” The Bybee memo distorted international and U.S. law to give a green light for the kinds of torture and mistreatment documented in Abu Ghrayb, Guantanamo Bay, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.
