BU Theology Students Confront Biolab Construction |

 Last Wednesday, February 15th, students from the BU School of Theology tied themselves to a civil rights memorial on campus in protest of the construction of the proposed BioSafety Level 4 laboratory that would test deady diseases on animals and put nearby residents at risk. Calling the lab an act of environmental racism, some students flyered and spoke to crowds passing by.

Anti-Biolab Protesters Visit BU President Brown’s Home for a Second Time |

 Roughly 30 concerned citizens chanted slogans and wielded signs and banners in front of BU President Robert Brown’s house late Monday night, for the second time in one week, to protest BU’s proposed Biolab in the Roxbury / South End area which could break ground as early as this month. Activism against the Biolab, which will likely be performing illegal research on deadly pathogens such as tularemia and Ebola, has been on the rise since it recently gained Federal approval to be built against the community’s wishes. |

Health Care Amendment Campaign Gaining Momentum; Supporters Plan Action for May 10th Constitutional Convention |

 BOSTON, MA - February 10, 2006 - Representatives from 30 labor and community groups have joined 50 other organizations committed to support passage of the Health Care Amendment that would guarantee every Massachusetts resident access to affordable coverage for medically necessary health and mental health care services. The amendment will be on the agenda of the Constitutional Convention slated to meet again on May 10th. |

 A dozen Boston University (BU) students and other concerned citizens gathered outside of BU President Robert Brown's $4.5 million house in Brookline protesting the proposed BU Biolab in Roxbury / South End. The Biolab, which has recently gained federal approval for construction, could break ground as soon as this month, against the community's wishes. |

 Rep. William Delahunt is the seventh member of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation to co-sponsor HR 676, the "Medicare for All" approach to health care reform written by Rep. John Conyers.
"Skyrocketing costs, deteriorating quality of care, loss of insurance coverage and access to essential services is affecting everyone's health care," said Congressman Delahunt. "Common sense solutions like extending Medicare to cover everyone can save money while improving quality and access to health care for all. That's why I've decided to co-sponsor HR 676." |

Rosa Parks Human Rights Day March |

 Over 500 people participated in the "Rosa Parks National Day of Absence Against Poverty, Racism and War" march that began on Dudley Street in Jamaica Plain and went all the way to City Hall in Boston flanked by two rows of police on bikes and motorcycles. The march had an impressive concurrence from the black community and was well received by people who waved, hand-gestured for peace, and honked their cars on the streets. The highlight of the day was when marchers reached Madison Park Technical Vocational High School and exchanged calls of solidarity with dozens of students hanging from windows, shouting "Rosa Parks! Rosa Parks!" but were not allowed to join the crowd. Inspirational speakers for the day included Chuck Turner, Charles Yancey, Felix Arroyo, Rev. Franklin Hobbs, Minister Rodney Muhammad, and local activists.
On Oct. 26, the Boston City Council passed a 13-0 resolution in tribute to the 50th anniversary of Rosa Parks' defiance to segregation in the US, and encouraged businesses and schools to close for the day of December 1st. Activists in New York, Baltimore and Detroit also organized events and hope to get a similar resolution passed in their cities. |

Free Food Distro in Jamaica Plain Rethinks Charity Bite by Bite |

 While many people spent Thanksgiving volunteering at soup kitchens, a new, weekly free food distribution project rolled on at a subsidized housing complex in Jamaica Plain.
While many people volunteer in local soup kitchens on thanksgiving, others are wondering how to make food a free and stable resource year-round in their neighborhoods. Food Not Bombs is a project that has been taking free food to the streets of Boston for the past 25 years. It is a grassroots effort with no paid staff or office. It has consisted of an amorphous flux of people and ideas. Food Not Bombers gather food that would otherwise be trashed at local markets, and give it away. One of the latest incarnations is distributing free fruits and vegetables every saturday in front of the South Street Apartments complex - a low income housing project in Jamaica Plain. |

 BU is having a Global Health Initiative conference and one of the events was in a BU auditorium where BU President Robert Brown introduced other speakers (including the US surgeon general), plugging the proposed bioweapons lab in South End/Roxbury. Activisits with the BU Peace & Justice Project and Boston Mobilization staged a protest during President Brown's speech. The Global Health Initiative is supposed to promote public healthcare, not top secret military research. Here are pictures. |
