Operation: Over Occupies BU President Robert Brown's Office
bulab.jpgBoston, MA--This morning seven individuals began an occupation of Boston University President Robert Brown’s office in protest of the proposed BioSafety Level 4 (BSL4) Laboratory. At approximately 9:20am, seven protestors entered Brown’s office, informed the staff that a nonviolent occupation was occurring and asked them to leave. After Brown and the staff refused to leave, the protesters linked arms in Brown’s office and started the occupation.

Diversions Unlimited

Rockland, MA--The enforcement of our Bill of Rights and United States Constitution has become income-based. When abusive, politically-connected corporations merge, individuals are in danger of losing more freedoms, rights, and protections. Who benefits most from subsidized housing complexes?

Why is enough never enough for previous and new corporate landlords at Rockland Place Apartments, located in Rockland, Massachusetts? Low-income residents received another notice for request to increase rents on April 7, 2006. If Mass Housing approves this request, low-income tenants are denied any right to dispute rent increases until 2009. While convenient for some, this approval would be another way to disrespect and disempower low-income residents. A fair and understandable request would be for 1-year at a time, from 3 to 5% for 2006.

The Threat Of Compulsory Insurance
400px-Flag_of_the_Red_Cross.svg.pngThe precedent of compelling drivers to purchase private auto insurance is bad enough, but one can opt out. One doesn't have to drive, they say. The only way to opt out of compulsory health insurance, however, would be to die.

Concerned citizens "die" at BU biolab site
die-in3.jpgA crowd of people gathered outside the site of BU's proposed biolab late Tuesday afternoon and fell down "dead," faces streaked with fake blood. "We wanted to show the public what an outbreak might look like," said Derek Garcia, a Boston-area resident. The street theater, which was staged by anti-biolab protestors, was intended to draw attention to the dangers of placing a Biosafety Level 4 (BSL4) facility in the middle of a densely-populated urban area. Participants included members of the direct action campaign Operation: Over, people from the Coalition to Stop the Bioterrorism Lab, and members of the Green-Rainbow Party.

Archdiocese of Boston Abandons Children in Need of Adoption
st_francis_assisi_compress.jpgFor over 100 years, the Catholic Charities of Boston has provided loving homes for children by finding adoptive parents for them. Because of disputes about gay parents, they have decided to stop providing adoption services at all.

The social welfare organization, Catholic Charities of Boston, has decided to end its adoption program on the grounds that if they comply with Massachusetts law allowing for gay parents to adopt children that they will violate Church teachings.

Peoples Victory in Picariello Case!
20050728-Free-Speech-Radio.jpgPeoples Victory in Picariello Case!

After two years of courtroom battle, a very significant peoples' victory was won in court today in the case against longtime anti-war activist Richard Picariello. Picariello was acquitted on all charges in the first of the two cases. And the defense motion was granted to dismiss the second case arising out of a protest at a 2004 Bush fundraiser in Boston because of prosecution failure to provide required discovery information.

South Dakota's Abortion Ban: A Discussion by Reproductive Freedom Activist Marlene Gerber Fried
south-dakota.pngOn February 24th, the state of South Dakota passed a ban on nearly all abortions. The ban, which is expected to take effect this July, will shut down the state's one abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, forcing many pregnant females to travel long distances or perhaps seek underground providers. The ban is expected to challenge Roe versus Wade, the 33-year-old legislation that legalized abortion in the U.S.

As co-founder of the National Network of Abortion Funds and organizer of Hampshire College's annual reproductive justice conference, Marlene Gerber Fried has a long history within the reproductive justice movement. On Tuesday, February 28th, she spoke near Boston about the meaning of South Dakota's abortion ban. This is an audio recording of her lecture.
