BU Biolab Protest Pictures
00020.jpgBU is having a Global Health Initiative conference and one of the events was in a BU auditorium where BU President Robert Brown introduced other speakers (including the US surgeon general), plugging the proposed bioweapons lab in South End/Roxbury. Activisits with the BU Peace & Justice Project and Boston Mobilization staged a protest during President Brown's speech. The Global Health Initiative is supposed to promote public healthcare, not top secret military research. Here are pictures.

Boston Direct Action Project Releases “Guide To Alternatives to the Military” for Local Youth
booklet.jpg(Boston, MA October 31, 2005) Boston Direct Action Project has recently published a booklet entitled “Guide To Alternatives to the Military,” with information about education, jobs, and opportunities for youth in the greater Boston area.

"We created this "Military Alternatives" booklet because we understand its not enough to simply explain the reasons not to join the military. We believe it is equally important to suggest realistic alternatives," said Jonathan McIntosh, a designer of the booklet.

Retirees and union members blow the whistle on GE’s low pension and health care benefits
DSC00854.JPGLynn, MA -- General Electric retirees led a rally in front of the Riverworks plant on Sept. 29 calling attention to the company’s skimpy pension benefits that have not kept up with the rising cost of living -- especially skyrocketing health costs. The retirees were joined by current GE employees, Local 201 and other union leaders, and several community supporters. At the rally, retirees used a cell phone to call GE CEO Jeffrey R. Immelt at the company’s corporate headquarters in Fairfield, CT. Unable to reach him, they sent a message by blowing whistles and playing a new protest song, “The Plight of the GE Pensioneer.”

Community members support Medicare for all as numbers of uninsured rise
quote.jpgBOSTON – New census data released Tuesday is galvanizing support for a public forum on Sept. 1 where several Members of Congress will hear from a diverse group of seniors, workers, caregivers, immigrants, women, people of color, the uninsured, and local elected officials in support of a "Medicare for All" solution to the health care crisis.

The growing severity of the health care crisis has brought together over 40 grassroots organizations in Massachusetts for an impressive -- and unusual -- showing of political unity.

Bikes not Bombs looking for a new home
BNB.jpgJAMAICA PLAIN.—Keeping the enormous steel thicket of bicycles, at 59 Amory St. organized and manageable is a tall enough task for Bikes Not Bombs' (BNB) industrious volunteers, yet founder Carl Kurz and his bike mechanic cadres now face an even bigger challenge. Moving.

The organization has been a tenant-at-will for over two years. Only a few other possibilities for a home have presented themselves since then, none were perfectly matched. Without a lease, members of the group worry that the building may be sold or the owners may decide to renovate.

“We’re part of the fabric of JP that people love,” said Kurz, “if we move too far out we won’t be able to attract the same numbers of people and the same support, so it’s a tough problem.”

Plans for Women's Jail May Meet an Early Fate: Statewide Coalition Calls for Moratorium on New Jails
Hampden.jpgAUDIO: The state wants to build a new women's jail to replace part of the existing Hampden County jail. The Statewide Harm Reduction Coalition, a group that works on drug policy and rehabilitation, held a press conference last week to raise objections to the construction of the proposed Chicopee women's jail in western Massachusetts. People spoke out about the overwhelming number of prisoners charged with drug-related crimes, the racial dynamics of incarceration in Massachusetts, and the misuse of state funds for what they feel is an unnecessary new jail. They called for a moratorium on all new jail and prison construction in Massachusetts.
