South Dakota's Abortion Ban: A Discussion by Reproductive Freedom Activist Marlene Gerber Fried
south-dakota.pngOn February 24th, the state of South Dakota passed a ban on nearly all abortions. The ban, which is expected to take effect this July, will shut down the state's one abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, forcing many pregnant females to travel long distances or perhaps seek underground providers. The ban is expected to challenge Roe versus Wade, the 33-year-old legislation that legalized abortion in the U.S.

As co-founder of the National Network of Abortion Funds and organizer of Hampshire College's annual reproductive justice conference, Marlene Gerber Fried has a long history within the reproductive justice movement. On Tuesday, February 28th, she spoke near Boston about the meaning of South Dakota's abortion ban. This is an audio recording of her lecture.

Tortured Prisoner Fights Back: Abu Ghraib, RI, USA
jail.jpgProvidence, RI--Prison officials in Rhode Island are worried. Their crimes are being exposed.

Michael Walsh, a 30 year-old construction laborer from East Providence, RI, is being held in Minimum Security at the Adult Correctional Institution (ACI) of Rhode Island. On February 18, Valentines Day, he says that prison guards preformed an anal cavity search on him. They accused him of smuggling contraband, and in a depraved act reminiscent of the crimes of Abu Ghraib, forced Walsh to eat his own feces. Walsh says they then denied him the use of the sink and a toothbrush all day. Walsh also says that ACI officers beat him on the face with a telephone book.

molly.jpgOn Saturday, February 25, residents of the greater Boston area came together outside of the Tremont Street Military Recruitment Center to resist the recruitment of their friends, families, classmates and peers. The demonstration was called by members of the Radical Youth Alliance, an organization of dedicated youth throughout the area who work together on a variety of issues but focus on resisting the war.

Balata Camp Solidarity Demo. - Newton
2274.jpgA few of the usual suspects turned out for a small but colorful Palestine vigil at Newton city hall Wednesday night. We gathered in solidarity with the residents of the Balata refuge camp outside of Nablus which has been under siege by attacking Israeli forces for almost a week. Many children and camp residents have been shot, some killed, homes have been demolished and all deprived of food, medical care, and basic freedoms as the occupiers conducts ruthless military aggression against the camps 21,000 inhabitants.

Prospective BU Students Informed of Biolab During Campus Tours
boycott1.jpgSeven Boston University (BU) campus tours were interrupted today by members of Operation: Over to inform the prospective students about BU’s proposed BioSafety Level 4 (BSL-4) lab in Roxbury. These interruptions were intended to promote the boycott of BU that Operation: Over has called.

The boycott is calling for high school students who are considering attending BU to reconsider, on the grounds that their tuition money will go towards funding the proposed BSL-4 lab, which will be built in a densely populated, low-income community of color against its wishes.

BU Theology Students Confront Biolab Construction
cause5.jpgLast Wednesday, February 15th, students from the BU School of Theology tied themselves to a civil rights memorial on campus in protest of the construction of the proposed BioSafety Level 4 laboratory that would test deady diseases on animals and put nearby residents at risk.
