IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS: Rally for Immigrants Rights in Harvard Square
rally in BrattleOn Saturday, August 2 about 150 of us gathered in front of the Au Bon Pain cafe in Harvard Square to protest against the racist attacks on immigrants and Muslims by both the US government and individuals, including government round-ups of people based on their ethnicity; other forms of racial, ethnic and religious profiling; violations of the civil rights of immigrants from Middle Eastern, South Asian and Muslim countries; and bigoted attacks, including arson and lynching, against Middle Easterners, South Asians, and Muslims. Speakers at the rally called the immigrant rights movement a struggle for democracy of the same sort as the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Organizers are dealing with the crisis by organizing on multiple levels and building coalitions across communities.

PRISON REFORM/ABOLITION: State Government Ignores Humane, Cost-Saving Alternatives to Prison
At the same time as it sacrifices essential services to taxpayers on the altar of “budget cuts,” the Massachusetts state government is ignoring a potentially far-reaching strategy for trimming costs, and, many observers say, worsening already-existing problems in the Department of Corrections for a waste totaling tens of millions of dollars annually. The state government is continuing to build new prisons, instead of investing in cheaper and more effective alternatives such as treatment for addiction, probation, and community service.

LABOR: Victory for Striking Projectionists at Somerville Theater
After having been locked-out for over ten weeks, projectionists at the Somerville Theatre have emerged victorious in their struggle for union recognition. The management has agreed to voluntarily recognize the union, sign a fair contract, and pay full back wages to all locked-out employees. Although this was a modest struggle in and of itself, we see it as a significant victory for young, exploited and pissed off workers everywhere.

LABOR: Verizon Workers Prepare to Strike
On August 2, 2003, the contracts covering 75,000 workers at Verizon expire. The workers are members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Verizon is one of the top ten corporations in the U.S., is highly profitable, and its CEO Ivan Seidenberg makes 500 times the salary of the average worker. The company is demanding major concessions from its employees, including health care and job security. A majority of the workers at IBEW & CWA voted to authorize a strike. They've been ramping up the actions as August 2 gets closer.

IMMIGRANT RIGHTS: Palestinian Rights Activist's Deportation Hearing Approaches; FBI Intimidates Witnesses
On the morning of November 4, 2002, well-known Palestinian activist Amer Jubran was arrested at his home in Cumberland, Rhode Island by FBI and INS agents. Only two days earlier, Amer had lead the first demonstration organized by the New England Committee to Defend Palestine, a group which he had helped to create. Today, after eight months of letters, faxes, phone calls, and office visits, the INS (now called the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is still trying to have Amer deported. The BICE, which originally accused Amer of several serious violations, has dropped all charges except the claim that two forms certifying Amer’s marriage were filled out on different dates. Although the government has repeatedly claimed that this case is not political, FBI agents have harrassed and intimidated Mr. Jubran’s witness pool in a last-ditch effort to silence those who will testify on his behalf.

NATIVE AMERICAN STRUGGLES: Rhode Island Governor Raids Narragansett Indians, Community Rallies in Their Support
In an effort to better themselves economically, the Narragansett Indians of Rhode Island opened a cigarette shop on their land and claimed that because they are a federally recognized tribe, they do not have to charge State taxes. Governor Carcieri sent in the State Troopers to terrorize the Indians--unarmed people were set upon by attack dogs and State Troopers used violent takedowns with no provocation. In response, 2,000 people (Native and non-Native) held a rally in support of the Narragansett.

THE COMMONWEALTH: Rally Against the State Budget Cuts
protestFrom 4:30 to 6:30 on June 25, about sixty people rallied in front of the State House against the budget cuts supported by the Governor and most legislators. These cuts would result in a loss of services to a wide number of vulnerable groups, and this was reflected in the wide array of people that came to the protest--labor unionists, social workers, community organizers, homeless activists, housing rights activists, and students at public colleges, as well as their supporters. The group called for loopholes in the budget that result in the wealthy paying a lower tax rate than the poor to be closed and for taxes to be raised as much as necessary to continue funding vital programs. Reactions from passers-by were generally positive.
