35 protestors occupied the Whitmore administration building Monday April 29th to protest the university's refusal to recognize the residential assistants' union.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING: 14 Tenant Activists Arrested in Landlord's Office
At 7:30pm, after the negotiating meeting with [Landlord] Colannino had broken down, the police began to arrest the protesters who had occupied the office. Fourteen tenant activists were arrested on trespassing charges. They were led out of Colannino’s office building by the police and were received by the demonstrators outside who had been on a picket line and endured the rain for four hours.

LABOR: National Day of Student Labor Action Rally
MLK BannerOn April 4th, Boston Student Labor Action Project (SLAP) rallied with Harvard workers demanding that Harvard sign the union contract. They also remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the 34th anniversary of his assasination, while he was in Memphis supporting striking sanitation workers.

MIDDLE EAST & BOSTONIANS: 4/1: Arabs, Jews, Others Vigil for Palestine
On April 1 at 5:00 outside of Park St. T Station, about 200 people gathered for a vigil in solidarity with the Palestinian people, currently under intensified attacks by the Israeli occupation forces. It was a diverse crowd, with women in Muslim headscarves, families with small children, and many clearly self-identified Jews.

MEDIA: 'Zine-Makers Building Grassroots Media
23 March, '02, Boston, MA--This weekend at the Mass. College of Art, people from all over the northeast gathered for Beantown ‘Zinetown, Boston’s annual ‘zine fair. A couple dozen tables were set up, displaying people’s self-published, photocopied works, which ranged from personal stories to political commentary to comics. Although the attendees were predominantly white and countercultural, there was an unusually diversity in the age range.

SLAP protest in front of Star MarketThis spirited demonstration denounced Star’s CEO Ross McLaren for management's campaign to stop union organizing. The tactics, which have led to a formal complaint by the National Labor Relations Board, have ranged from performing surveillance on workers’ organizing activity to attempts to misrepresent and discredit the union by forcing workers to attend anti-union meetings and watch anti-union videos.

MLK PROTEST: MLK Day Living Wage Rally
At 2:00 on Martin Luther King Day (01/21/02) about 400 Harvard University janitors and their supporters from the community packed the First Unitarian Church for a noisy, celebratory rally in support of a living wage. Afterwards, 250 people spilled out of the church into the cold drizzle for a vibrant, upbeat march around Harvard Square.
