STATE REPRESSION: Boston-Area Community Organizer Faces Jailtime
Camilo ViveirosCamilo Viveiros, a tenant organizer in southeastern Mass., was arrested along with over 400 other protesters in Philadelphia in August 2000 during the Republican National Convention. People had come to demonstrate against police brutality, the increase in construction of jails rather than schools, in favor of affordable housing, healthcare and immigrants rights and many other issues. They were faced, however, with repression, surveillance and brutality by the police in one of the largest violations of First Amendment rights since the Vietnam War. Of the 400+ arrested, 95% have had their cases either dismissed for lack of evidence or have been acquitted. Camilo, whose trial is set for February 18, still faces severe charges.

IRAQ: 500 Rally for Peace with Iraq on MLK Day, Following a Nationwide Weekend of Protest
On Martin Luther King Day in front of Cambridge City Hall, 500 people rallied for peace. This protest against the Bush administration’s plans to go to war with Iraq was not isolated, but part of a nationwide and worldwide weekend of peace rallies. This particular rally sought to remind people of the connections King had made between racism, militarism and materialism.

IMMIGRANT RIGHTS: Immigration Registration Deadline Passes; 150 Protest
Friday, January 10 was the deadline for the second group of foreign visitors required to register in person with the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) under the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS). On the morning of the tenth, registrants formed long lines to register at regional INS headquarters in the JFK Federal Building. Activists from the Amer Jubran Defense Committee acted as legal observers and moral support for the registrants; two were detained and given tickets for "political solicitation" inside a federal building. The previous day, about 150 people gathered outside the building in a lunchtime picket protesting the registration progam.

IRAQ: Norwood, Mass. Resident Reports From Iraq
Iraq is so different from what we see on TV. As we drove through Baghdad for the first time, all I could think, over and over, was the simple truth that at the heart of it all, this is just a place where people live. Ordinary people, welcoming people. That’s it, at the core and these are the people who will suffer. The seeming normalcy of life is a sharp contrast to the anxiety that the people live with, and which we learn when we meet them up close. The country has already been devastated by sanctions. A war will only hurt these ordinary people who live here. They are already so beaten down, and war will only make it worse.

IMMIGRANTS' RIGHTS: Protests Over INS Detentions
In what is becoming a familiar sight, protesters again gathered Friday, December 20 evening in downtown Boston outside the John F. Kennedy federal building, which houses the regional headquarters of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS). The thirty-five to forty protesters came despite a heavy rainstorm to protest the detention of hundreds of non-citizens by the INS in southern California. They plan to return to the headquarters for another protest on Monday, December 23.

WOMEN'S LIBERATION: Student Group Organizes to Oppose Sexist Abercrombie & Fitch Catalogue
Gordon College students are organizing a protest and boycott of Abercrombie and Fitch after the company released its Christmas catalog entitled “Christmas and Sex.” The catalog, which contains 71 pictures of nude models, has sparked outrage throughout Gordon. “We are horrified that this type of soft pornography goes unnoticed,” says Gordon senior Jamee Borcuk. “In a subtle yet insidious way the Abercrombie and Fitch catalog condones the use of pornography which leads to the very sexual abuse we have been fighting to end.”

RIGHT TO DISSENT: FBI "Interviews" Iraqi Professor at UMass Amherst
On Oct. 24 Mr. M.J. Alhabeeb an Iraqi professor at UMass Amherst was "interviewed" by the FBI. This attack is but one of hundreds that have occurred on campuses after Sept. 11. But a nationwide fightback is growing to protest the increasing racist profiling and blatant attacks on academic freedom by the government under the guise of "fighting terrorism."
