LABOR: NECCO Factory Machinists on Strike
NECCO factory machinists are striking for improvements in their contract, especially in health care coverage. As the current contract stands, health care fees would be ramped up to $150/week within the next two years. NECCO is scheduled to move out of Cambridge this winter, to a new, non-union location in Revere, resulting in many layoffs. Although negotiations are happening today, the machinists are not hopeful and expect the strike to continue.

STATE REPRESSION: Local Activist Still Faces Trumped Up Charges From R2K Protest in 2000
Camilo ViveirosBoston area activist Camilo Viveiros still faces charges from the R2K protests against the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in 2000. Charges against most of the 400 people arrested at R2K have been thrown out, but Viveiros is still being targeted as the Phildelphia city government tries to justify its heavy-handed repression.

LABOR: Gucci Store Briefly Shut Down in Protest Against Union-Busting and Sweatshops
On August 9, a small but lively action gave the ritzy shops of the Copley Place mall a taste of the grassroots. About twenty activists from UNITE and Union Summer picketed outside the Gucci store, protesting union-busting and the use of sweatshop labor by Gucci's parent company, PPR. Store managers responded by locking their doors, keeping out both activists and potential customers.

Safe foods and workers' rights.In Cambridge, the “Seattle coalition” came together on July 22, 2002 to protest the treatment of workers and the sale of unsafe genetically engineered food at Shaw’s and Star Market. About 150 labor, environmental, church, human rights and economic justice activists rallied against Shaw’s/Star’s union-busting and its sale of untested genetically engineered food.

24-year-old Palestinian activist and Canadian citizen Jaoudat Abouazza is being held by the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) in Bristol County jail in Massachusetts. Since his May 30 arrest, Abouazza has been held on suspicions of terrorism, interrogated without a lawyer, beaten, and had four of his teeth forcibly extracted without consent. This is the story of his detention.

CIVIL LIBERTIES: Hundreds Rally in Defense of Civil Liberties for All
On June 22, hundreds gathered on the Boston Common for a rally to defend the civil liberties of all, both citizens and immigrants, against the repressive measures of the Bush administration. At any one point, there were 300 people gathered, but there was also a heavy turn over, indicating that many more than that came through in support over the course of the day.
