JUSTICE FOR JANITORS: 800 Rally and March For Janitors
Billy BraggAs the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 615 janitors' strike finished its third week, about eight hundred janitors, students, and community members rallied in Copley Square, followed by a spirited march through the Prudential Center and back to Copley Square. The janitors' strike targets major downtown Boston buildings serviced by contract cleaning agencies, especially UNICCO. The union's main demands include more full-time jobs, health insurance for more janitors, and better wages.

IRAQ: Former UN Weapons Inspector Speaks Out Against War with Iraq at Deerfield
Scott Ritter, the former head of the UN weapons inspections team in Iraq, spoke at Deerfield Academy to a packed auditorium Tuesday night October 15th. According to Ritter, the Bush administration has not shown us any evidence of weapons of destruction because there isn't any. 95% of the weapons Mr. Ritter's inspection team was sent to find were located and destroyed. Ritter urged people to get involved with the democratic process and speak out against the war.

JUSTICE FOR JANITORS: Second Week of Janitors' Strike Sees More Civil Disobedience
Fourteen community members, including Cambridge State Representative Jarrett Barrios, were arrested in an act of civil disobedience to support the janitors of SEIU local 615 as they entered the second week of their strike. The act was part of a full day of rallies and pickets to support the striking janitors. The janitors' strike targets major downtown Boston buildings serviced by contract cleaning agencies, especially UNICCO. The union's main demands revolve around better healthcare coverage, more full-time employment, and higher wages.

ELECTORAL POLITICS: Protests Outside Second Gubernatorial Debate About Exclusion of Green Party
Stein With CrowdOn October 1st in Worcester, supporters of Green Party gubernatorial candidate Jill Stein arrived at Worcester Polytechnic Institute to protest the exclusion of their candidate from three scheduled debates. The debate was the second in this series. Stein supporters contributed a significant presence at this first debate and made an even stronger showing in Worcester, one that would lead to the creation of two more debates to include all five official candidates.

JUSTICE FOR JANITORS: Boston Janitors Launch Massive Strike
The Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) local 615 lauched one of the largest labor actions in recent Boston history on Monday, September 30. Twelve hundred janitors from about fifteen buildings did not attend work that evening, going on strike instead. The following night, more janitors struck and the union plans to continue escalating until up to 11,000 janitors are on strike throughout Greater Boston.

LABOR: "Shop-In" for Shaw's Workers--and Janitors
Check OutOn September 28, twenty shoppers participated in a "shop-in" at the Shaw's/Star Market near MIT. The shoppers wore bright yellow T-shirts reading "We support Shaw's/Star Workers Right To Organize". The UFCW is in the middle of a one-year-old campaign to organize 5,500 workers at 44 Shaw's and Star Markets (both owned by Sainsbury) throughout the state. Star Market refuses to hire workers full-time, making them ineligible for benefits, even though they work thirty to thirty-five hours per week. The company has also held intimidating meetings at which they tell workers that joining a union is a bad idea.
