DAY 2: Peace Vigils, Rallies in Boston and Cambridge
The Day After, Boston residents express feelings of caution, calls for peace, and demands for war. Wednesday evening at 6:00 in Copley Square in Boston and Harvard Square in Cambridge, large vigils were held mourning for the dead in yesterday’s terrorist attacks and also calling on the US government not to respond to the attacks with more violence. At the same time an initially small nationalist rally in Park Street in Boston turned into a large crowd.

PLANES HIJACKED FROM LOGAN AIRPORT: World Trade Center Destroyed, Pentagon Damaged in Apparent Terrorist Attack
On Tuesday, a hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC and caused the collapse of one of its sections.
Two other hijacked airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, each into one of the towers that constituted the World Trade Center. Shortly after the impacts, both towers collapsed to the ground.
A fourth hijacked airplane crashed in Pennsylvania, southeast of Pittsburgh.
For more detailed information visit the Global Indymedia site.
Two of these airplanes had departed from Logan Airport in Boston, which is still completely sealed off as of midday 12 September, and is to remain so indefinitely. An investigation is being conducted and it has been reported that two of the hijackers had flown from Portland, Maine to Logan Airport. Slightly more than 24 hours after the acts, many fingers are already being pointed to various Islamic countries since "Islamic texts" and a video on "how to fly planes" were discovered inside luggage at Logan Airport. This luggage is reported as belonging to the hijackers and as having missed the connection from the flight from Portland, Maine to the flight departing Logan Airport. Cab drivers and baggage handlers have also been reported to be suspected accomplices in these acts.
These discoveries are used to attempt to justify the suspicions of most high-ranking officials in the US that the primary suspect is Osama bin Laden, the suspected terrorist trained by the CIA, now hiding in Afghanistan.
Most of Boston's federal, state and 'tall' buildings have reopened today after being closed for most of the day yesterday.
Although complete lists of the casualties have not been released, several names, many of people based in the Boston area, have been; notably the two pilots and members of the crews, co-founder of Cambridge-based Akamai Technologies and a former Boston Bruins hockey player.
A toll-free victim information line has been set up at 1-800-293-4031.

SUBURBAN SPRAWL: The Encroachment of Suburbia on Wilderness
Aaron Schlosser of Merrimac, MA, describes the spread of suburbs in his town:
The growth rate for my town has been 25% since the 1990 census. Year by year, forest by forest falls to the indiscriminate hell of urban sprawl, as so called middle-class, suburban people move away from the city, invading my community, changing its energy and its feel and its everyday routine. The feeling could only be described as shock that eventually turns to anger, then slowly to resentment, and finally hopelessness.

ANALYSIS: Building a Global Grassroots Infrastructure: A Series of 4 Notes
by George Salzman Sun Aug 5 '01

"I think it would be romantic, and probably fatal to our aspirations if we relied only on massive demonstrations against global capitalism, and failed to build simultaneously a new kind of 'community', that is, a real, conscious, geographically dispersed grassroots infrastructure. It seems to me that in order to succeed, it will be necessary to continue a vast number of efforts..."
